About this blog
Richard Gorelick was appointed The Baltimore Sun's restaurant critic in September 2010. Before joining the paper staff fulltime, he contributed freelance criticism and features articles about food to area and regional publications. Along the way, he dispatched for short-distance trucking companies, shilled for cultural non-profits, and assisted in cognitive neurology research – never the subject, always the control.
He takes restaurants seriously but not himself, and his favorite restaurant is the one you love, too.

OMG, I almost spit my margarita all over Jesus (the pool boy). That's delightful.

awesome!

I have no idea what Piv's is, and only the vaguest idea where York Rd. is, but I love this! Good for them!
Posted by: Lissa | July 17, 2009 2:41 PM
Now that's unpretentious.
Posted by: Owl Meat Gravy | July 17, 2009 2:58 PM
These people are funny. I'll have to stop in one day next week.

Two stars, not falling behind, not showing off.
Posted by: Robert of Cross Keys | July 17, 2009 3:23 PM
FYI, Lissa, Gorelick reviewed Piv's only last week, and already they're trying to milk two stars for what they're worth. (Better two stars than three and one-half stars, of course.)

Hooray for the suburbs!

It's true, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

I saw the sign yesterday on my way home and I thought it was hilarious. My husband and I had just been talking about the review since we used to be one of those regulars who knew what to avoid on the menu. We haven't been in ages but maybe now we have a reason to go back.
Posted by: Lynn | July 17, 2009 4:06 PM
Great picture, Richard. By the way, give me and George a call sometime. We haven't seen you in ages.

That great photo was emailed by me but taken by someone else. I'll ask him if he wants his name made public.
Richard, that's you!!??

Thanks, hmpstd. I actually did read that. Forgot already. It didn't elevate my opinion of Cockeysville.
Still, that is a great way to react to a review. Not everyone can be, or should be, Charleston.

Richard, sushine, it is me! Since I hurt my knee (long story) all we do anymore is eat out instead of going sailing. EL's (and your) reviews and this blog have been keeping us from going to the same three places over and over.

LOVE a good sense of humor more than just about anything else, and Piv's has it. It's way the heck out of my neighborhood, but I might just have to go because they obviously have a great sense of humor.

I saw the sign Sat. morning on the way home, (gas is cheaper at Carrol Independent Fuel w/cash) and had to laugh also.
I've never been in either Piv's location, nor when this one was Bare Bones...
But back when it was Kasmocoes(sp??) I always enjoyed my self and the food was above adverage pub fare.
Made many late night trips to their carry-out side door for really good oven toasted subs and fried mushrooms.
I don't eat out much in the Baltimore city/county area since I moved to So. York Co. Pa. 5 years ago but will give PIV's a shot when I do based on the self depreciation proudly displayed when I do.
I don't post much but read daily and LOVE this Family!!

Bud, Make sure you come back and participate. Friendly voices are always welcome.
Posted by: NotableM | July 19, 2009 3:21 PM
Bud - Yes! I remember Kosmocoes (sp?). When I was young, my dad and I would go there every now and then, and I always considered it such a "grown up dinner". Especially because he would let me get the lobster tail. From what I recall, it was pretty heavy on greek food.
Posted by: Trixie | July 19, 2009 3:46 PM
It was spelled Kosmako's, I think.
The earliest incarnation of that location that I can remember is when it was Pappy's Pizza and Beer.
Posted by: Hal Laurent | July 19, 2009 4:00 PM
Yes Hal, it was spelled Kosmako's. I had my "leaving Balto for FL going away party " there. The owner of Kosmako's was a cousin to the owner of Maria's in Reisterstown. Often wonder if Maria's is still in business. They were the opposite of pretentious. First time I ever went in there (late on a Sunday evening) the kitchen was already closed. However, the owner bought me a drink at the bar and insisted he would fix me ANYTHING to eat that I would like on the house.
I became a longtime regular there after that.
Posted by: Lone Lady | July 19, 2009 5:40 PM
Hal is right, it was Kosmako's. I seem to also remember it as Pappy's as well.
I ate at Pivs when it was next to its nightclub place and it was pretty good then.
Hey Bud, glad you spoke up!

I forgot to mention....
Truth in disclosure...Back when the Baltmore Bayhawks were the local Major League Lacrosse team in town (they've moved to DC) I worked for the team as a scorekeeper. It was a great gig and I learned a lot about lacrosse. But the town never caught on and the weather was our nemesis. Ever been in in M&T Bank Stadium, which seats 70,000 and only had a crowd of maybe 200? Eerie.
Anyway, one of the Bayhawks owners was a Piv, so that is why we went out there. Dave is a great guy.
Still, its a good place to have a beer and a snack and take in a game.
Posted by: PCB Rob | July 19, 2009 5:52 PM
yea Piv's is awesome. the staff and owners at Piv's are pretty wacky. and Dave Pivec is a hell of a guy. His wife Sharon is a wonderful woman as well.
truth in disclosure - i am the gm and part owner. and i am their son.
