New Canton restaurant opens
![]()
Here I am. Back again. The big news today seems to be the Blue Hill Tavern, which I wrote about awhile back. It opened this weekend, and already I've gotten an e-mail from a reader I trust and a phone call from someone who asked about it back in May.
Midnight Sun Sam says people were calling him asking if he'd gone before it even opened. What's up with that? Genuine excitement or a media campaign?

The interior is pretty impressive. I went on Friday night got a 60 Minute IPA and looked at the food menu which, while wasn't too big, had a good amount of variety. The crowd was a mix from everything from shorts/t-shirt to kakhis/button-down. I hope the place does well.

In the opening and closings vein my wife and I went to the nearby Ryan's Daughter on Thursday night around 8:30 and were told; that the credit card machine was down, that there was a new owner and that some menu changes had been made that were not reflected on the printed menu as of yet. In addition the quality of the food was not nearly as good as was only a couple of months ago - I guess than next time we'll be heading to Crush instead.

♫The shills are alive with the sound of money…♫
Posted by: hmpstd | July 7, 2009 12:26 PM
So unless I bash the place I'm a shill? Nice logic hmpstd.
Posted by: NR | July 7, 2009 12:37 PM
No NR, it's because you speak entirely in the banal generalizations of bad PR flacks.
Posted by: Weenie Burger | July 7, 2009 12:43 PM
Well, NR, considering that the place had a "friends and family" opening last opening, per Sam Sessa's column, it's unclear just which posters are truly impartial.
Posted by: hmpstd | July 7, 2009 12:44 PM
Sounds like NR was there Friday, but the Friends and Fam event was before that on Thursday. Some of the same positives were echoed by Sam Sessa as well. Why can't we take the post at face value? I hate to say it, but I'd rather have the gripers come out of the woodwork about the whole Brewers Hill vs. Canton location squabble.
Posted by: Bob UU | July 7, 2009 1:08 PM
why the surprise about the interest in this place? this is the largest, most extravagent restaurant erected in all of Canton, Fells Point, and Federal Hill in recent memory. i was surprised that it slipped under the D@L and MS radar until now.
It didn't slip under our radar as we both posted on it months ago, but not surprisingly owners don't go out of their way to get publicity until they feel things are under control. I'm still hoping the owner of the new Hampden wine bar, 13.5 %, will return my phone calls. EL

It isn't too often that Brewer's Hill gets a place like this, so why not welcome it? Shills or not...who cares. Try it out for yourself and bring your comments back.
Posted by: BaltBabs | July 7, 2009 1:27 PM
Bob UU, my original comment was made in response to EL's original post on this topic, which mentioned that she had been targeted with inquiries for two months before the place opened. Even now, the place is only partially open, since it won't start serving lunch until next week (and its lunch menu has not yet been posted on its website).
NR may well be impartial, but the same cannot be said of all D@L posters.
Posted by: hmpstd | July 7, 2009 1:30 PM
I run past the building everyday and have been looking forward to its opening. not to shill, but just because I like to eat (and it is close to my house). Hopefully the food/beer is good enough for me to make this a regular place.
Posted by: Me | July 7, 2009 1:56 PM
I checked out their web site. Come on people, have your web site done before you opem a restaurant. No one wants to see this Coming Soon crap.
This place looks really pricey for Conkling St, hon. Their sandwiches run from $12-$19.

Oceanaire filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy today - One Restaurant Opens Another Reorganizes.

They look way expensive. Kind of weird in that location and in this economy. $52 for sous vide Chateaubriande. How do you make sous vide to order? Doens't it take like hours to make that? $9 hummous? Their cheapest bottle of wine is $34. That's a rough sell for Highlandtown
Posted by: Stanton Digrazia | July 7, 2009 3:18 PM
Geez, guys! I've seen my share of shills, and NR's comment was far from it. If NR was really shilling for BHT, it would read something like this:
I went to the Blue Hill Tavern and let me tell you that place was AWESOME. I was blown away by the incredible, jaw-dropping decor. And the menu -- OMG* -- I couldn't believe my eyes. It might be more than you're used to paying, but sometimes you need to indulge a little. The wine list is super long and the beers are cold and tasty. My oh my is this a boost for Brewer's Hill. The Blue Hill Tavern is bringing New York taste to Baltimore, one forkful at a time!
How about that? Man, I should have gone into PR.
*no, owl meat, i'm not talking about you
Posted by: Sam Sessa | July 7, 2009 3:53 PM
Sam, that was great.
"Their cheapest bottle of wine is $34."
Actually, $32.
I know there aren't many vegetarians here, but the lack of a vegetarian entree is always disappointing to me.

Nine dollars for hummus? What, is it gold-plated?
Posted by: Dahlink | July 7, 2009 5:48 PM
Sam Sessa, you nailed it. Hilariously. But as a one-time member of the PR fraternity, I've gotta' point out that a real pro rations the superlatives. Like you, my hunch is that NR's post was for real. And it's best to err on the side of caution when we speak of shilling.

Can't wait to see your review of this restaurant, EL. I went last night and was really impressed by the interior, though the bathroom was bland and looks like it's still getting worked on. They seem to be working out kinks in the menu, as is to be expected for the first week. The Natty Boh beer cheese soup was lovely, though I was disappointed it didn't come with fried green tomato sandwiches as the menu stated. The cucumber martini was too sweet for my taste--I was hoping for a cool summer refresher--but for those who prefer martinis sweet, the menu will deliver (such as the blueberry pie martini). I was impressed there was a vegetarian option on the menu that wasn't pasta, pizza or salad, which is my chief complaint with similar neighborhood places like Saute. The music choices were strange, but at least we could actually hear ourselves talk. Here's hoping for some seasonal rotation in the menu. Good luck, Blue Hill.

Is there s reason my comment/opinion on the place was not posted yesterday?
Posted by: selina | July 8, 2009 1:17 PM
Dear Selina, dont get mad at D@L for not posting a comment you left on Midnight Sun. And yes, it is posted. So I guess the answer is PEBKAC.

The Natty Boh beer cheese soup was lovely,
yuck. You know what my velveeta needs? Cheap beer!
Posted by: barph | July 8, 2009 3:08 PM
My two cents...
I drove by the place a few days ago and made a mental note to figure out what the heck was up, because it looked impressive from the outside, and I hadn't heard of it yet. I had intended to poke around and ask the D@L/MS crew about it. So, it's really possible that people are just noticing it in the neighborhood, not that "shills" are dropping the name all over town.
Looks like a decent place to check out.

Their menu is pretty steep, but I thought this was as mucha bar as a restaurant. I wonder what their drink prices are like. Does anyone know?
In an article in the BBJ the GM says he imagines it as a place to stop by after work for a beer and a burger. I can't get over the fact that their burger is $12.
Posted by: Brant Zabka | July 8, 2009 3:54 PM
What's great about this site is that JUST TODAY I drove past here for the first time in a while and was thinking "Whoa! Where did that come from?". Came here and sure enough...a bunch of talk.
I did like the look of the balcony table seating you see as you drive by. Nice touch for the area...and I'd pay for a $12 burger if it's an out of this world burger (better be).

Not one photo on their web site. How dumb are some people?

I had an enjoyable evening at Blue Hill. Being a restaurant veteran, I must say that this place has legs. You must try it. From the first challenge of parking...Free Valet or plenty of parking..... to the service.... I will drive from the county to make this location a frequent visit. Bravo!!!!

The Burger is worth the money.....This place is awesome!.....
Posted by: WT | July 8, 2009 11:17 PM
WT, I'm the hard to please type. Is Blue Hill really that great? Do you think I would like it? How awesome is it? Can you tell us more?
Posted by: Labyrinth Investigator | July 9, 2009 7:45 AM
WT,
More importantly, is there anything on the menu that is "Sheer bliss"?
Posted by: RayRay | July 9, 2009 10:49 AM
I had a look at the menu and see that the $9 hummus is "truffled" (which I am guessing means that it is drizzled with truffle oil, not gussied up with real truffles).
I can't bring myself to go to a restaurant that offers Oysters "Rockefellar" or "Smoked" Salmon Tartare, purely on grammatical grounds.
Posted by: Dahlink | July 9, 2009 3:21 PM
Dahlink, I was thinking the exact same thing. That whole menu could benefit from some serious proofreading. Wonder if the money being put into PR would be better spent on a copy editor.
Posted by: Laura Lee | July 9, 2009 3:38 PM
I noticed that too Dahlink. Inappropriate quotes always make me think it is ironic and I don't "like" ironic "food".
I would never call smoked salmon tartare. It's smoked salmon. And it's Rockefeller, unless you are Fatboy Slim funk soul brothas.
You guys might want to run your menu through spell check, If you are going to be that fancy (and a little pretentious), it looks silly to have "brocolli" and "zitrus zest". I do like the sound of zitrus zest though.
Good luck

I am sort of stuck on Wanderer's comment (#2), talking about Ryan's Daughter being "nearby". Near to Blue Hill? Only if you're talking in globally, not locally.
Posted by: Pigtown | July 9, 2009 7:11 PM
Pigtown, even I know that, and I'm out in the wilds of northern Baltimore county!

I saw something recently about someone who was a copy editor for a hip-hop magazine. That has got to be copy editor Hell. Everything is Z's and numbers. U gotst to have madd skillz there.
Ironically, the code letter below is "z:.
Posted by: Owl Meat Gravy | July 9, 2009 7:26 PM
Wanderer didn't say or imply that Ryan's Daughter was near Blue Hill. It was just the standard not-terribly-on-topic D@L post.
Posted by: Hal Laurent | July 9, 2009 7:28 PM
Pigtown, I understood Wanderer to mean (or imply) that he and his wife lived "nearby" to Ryan's Daughter. By happenstance, he posted his RD comment under this topic because he (presumably) didn't know of another D&L topic that would be more appropriate.
Posted by: hmpstd | July 9, 2009 7:49 PM
Wanderer's comment is just a non sequitor. Delve not into.

Owl, your syntax is starting to resemble Yoda's ...
Posted by: Dahlink | July 9, 2009 8:13 PM
Speaking of bad syntax, punctuation and grammar, the Sun article on the fire at Suburban House was not edited at all. It is just horrible.
As shocking as the fire, nearly.
Posted by: Lissa | July 9, 2009 8:21 PM
Lissa, you're right. That Suburban House fire article is possibly the worst one I've seen since the copy editors were largely done away with.
I haven't been to the Suburban House since I worked in Pikesville back in the 1980's, but even then it was an old-fashioned time-warp kind of place. It was kind of the Jewish version of (the late lamented) Karson's Inn.
Posted by: Hal Laurent | July 9, 2009 11:35 PM
Suburban House sounds like the kind of place I enjoy, actually. Plus I haven't had a nice bowl of good matzo soup in some time.

I have seen another review / comment somewhere about the "smoked" salmon. I believe that the dish is salmon tartar but it is served with actual smoke a la fancy molecular gastronomy. Have not heard anythng about the "Rockefeller".
Posted by: James | July 10, 2009 8:41 AM
What's most amazing about the lousy or non-existent edit job on the Suburban House story is--it's still up. Unfixed. Like that "Good place to bite, imbibe" headline, still there.
Posted by: chowsearch | July 10, 2009 11:07 AM
That Suburban House story is indeed shockingly sloppy, and it's very bizarre that nobody working at the paper, in any department, has read it and send a note to somebody to fix it.
Does anybody know if the story is in the print edition, and like that?
I guess we really are nearing the end of quality reporting and journalism from them.

I was just watching someone cooking on TV. I think his name was Tyler Perry. He said that one of the ingredients was hairy coat vair, pronounced exactly that way. I assume he meant haricot vert, which is the fancy French name for green beans or string beans. Come on, if you call yourself a chef you should know how to pronounce some basic French ingredients or just say it in English. The dullards are taking over.
