The end for Lucy's Irish Pub
Sam reports on Midnight Sun this morning that Lucy's Irish Pub and Restaurant is closing Sunday, with a chance that it might reopen in the fall. Someone either here in a comment or in an e-mail to me had asked about it a few days ago -- it was dark when it shouldn't have been, or something like that, and they wondered if it had already closed.
I'm not surprised, just sorry. Now I'm really at a loss as to where to tell people to go for dinner before a show at the Hippodrome.

I went there once for lunch and was underwhelmed. But for people who want to eat right by the theatre it's one of the few options. There's always Salsaritas....

Not too surprised either. After the way the current owner bought out (more like squeezed out) the former co-owner (and original restaurant namesake) I just never felt the need to eat there.
I miss the Maggie Moore's take on crabcake with the fried green tomato base. It was delicious.

Location, location, location. It just cannot survuve on the Hippodrome crowd alone. That West of downtown development just wil not thrive like harboreast, it's that simple. But for some reason, officials are afraid to admit it.

Well, it had a decent lunch and happy hour crowd courtesy of the nearby UMB campus. However, when it changed ownership, it wasn't the same and that was the vibe on campus.
There is still more development going on in the area and I hope it will again become a viable dining option.

I cannot image what it costs to heat/cool the building. It is such a beautiful building too. I hope it doesn't sit vacant forever. Will just become another adandoned building in Baltimore.

Agreed, after John & Maggie left it was never the same

I still remember going there when it was Maggie Moore's and my pal, Pat O'Brennan, the Chesapeake Troubador, was entertaining. They were lined up three deep at the bar and you had to shout over the Friday night crowd and Pat's spirited guitar to order a drink. People were waiting up to an hour for a table. It ain't easy to blow that kind of success. But apparently somebody did.

MAG, it's good to hear that Pat O'Brennan is still out there playing. I used to play music with his younger brother Kevin back in the 1970's.

I find it interesting that the Hipp Cafe is NEVER mentioned, yet it's right there in the Hippodrome (on the south side near the box office). I lunched there a couple of times. The fare consisted mostly of salads and sandwiches, but it was tasty and not too expensive. I don't understand why it never gets any notice--there's no easier way to eat and dash into the theater.

MAG and Hal,
I haven't heard of Pat O'Brennan in years. I believe I've seen him in OC a few times and definitely in Baltimore.
Good to hear he's still entertaining.
