Regis and Kelly need your vote, sort of

For some bizarre reason that I don't really understand, a burger from a Hagerstown eatery will be featured on LIVE! with Regis and Kelly, as part of “Live’s Ultimate Hometown Grill Off.”
"We’ve asked viewers to submit nominations for their favorite grill dish and the local chef who prepares it," the PR person told me.
"Each week we’ll fly in one of the nominees to prepare the dish on our show. At the end of the summer, one winner will be named and the chef and recipe will be featured in Better Homes and Gardens."
No, don't stop reading. ...
On the June 26 show, one of the five contestants in the burger category was the chorizo burger from Hempen Hill BBQ in Hagerstown.
I like the idea of Hempen Hill's chorizo burger winning (not that I've ever had it or even heard of the place), so what I want you to do is go on the Web site RIGHT NOW and vote for it and Chef Jason W. Vogel. Wouldn't it be excellent if he won?
Chorizo burger. Mmm. Sounds a little strange.
The voting ends tomorrow, June 28, at 10 a.m. Also, anyone who votes is entered to win a Weber grill.

Kelly is the one on the left.

I want the name of Regis's doctor. The man is almost 80, I think, but he doesn't look a day over 70!

Dahlink, what you really need is the name of his personal trainer.

Hal, you don't think there is some surgery involved? I'm already working out!

Speaking of Hagerstown Elizabeth have you tried the Airport Inn? Rack of lamb, crab cakes, and steaks to die for. I haven't been there in over 10 years. John Dorsey gave it a rave review years ago.
No, it seems so far away and there are always new restaurants opening closer to home. EL

Dahlink, I don't know if surgery was involved, but I'm embarrassed to admit that I saw a segment once where he was at his gym in workout attire, and he's quite muscular. He obviously does weight work.

Reeg had bypass surgery about ten years ago, I've heard him and Letterman talk about their experiences. I think they had the same doctor.

I love burgers and I love sausage sandwiches so I think this is a great idea. Any BBQ place has wine suggestions on the menu is my knid of place. This is going to be a road trip real soon. The burger topped with pulled pork and onion rings may take the title for the best idea yet.

I grew up in Hagerstown and go up to visit my mother frequently and I've never heard of Hempden Hill BBQ. I'll have to check it out next visit. But I ate at the Airport Inn in May for my mother's birthday and had the best rib eye steak I've ever had. The service was excellent as well as the rest of the food. If you're ever in the area it's definately worth checking out.

Hal, I do weight work as well, but that does nothing for the facial muscles!

Dahlink, you're probably right. I asked my wife (who pays more attention to these things than I do) if Regis had had cosmetic surgery, and she said "Absolutely!"

Tweety Cat - I am happy to hear it's still a great place to eat. I started eating there in 1969. It was much smaller then now. Nick the owner used to chat with me. He is a nice guy. I must take an overnite with the wife and eat there again.

Hal, I'm usually the last person to notice such things. I just happened to see my dermatologist shortly after Nancy Pelosi became Speaker, and I asked her what she thought Madame Speaker did to have such great-looking skin. She immediately responded "Facelift!"

Mission accomplished; vote recorded. However, it will take quite an effort (or an extended stay in Hagerstown) to get me past my two favorite restaurants there: Schmankerl Stube Bavarian Restaurant (downtown) and Orchid Garden on the far west side (in what I am guessing is an old Olive Garden building) with dynamite Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Since I'm here, there is some awfully good eating to be had in Gettysburg (which, thanks to Shelby Foote, is fast becoming my favorite local place for retreats [ooh ... unintentional pun; sorry!]).
Three favorites. Appalachian Brewing Co. has good beer and good root beer! A lot of local venues do 19th century dishes and their Chicken pot pie with cornbread crust is ... interesting. Farnsworth House offers the most extensive historic menu, and my favorite is the pork and sauerkraut (yes, the seminary of Seminary Ridge is Lutheran!). The find this trip is El Costeno, a Mexican restaurant in a downtown strip mall. The enchilada entree was better than good, but next time I might just order three pieces of the Tres Leches cake.

LC, I think you shot yourself in the foote there.

Lissa ... touche!
Interestingly, veterans of both sides decided that creating a national shrine dedicated to the "Prince of Peace" could make the pain go away, and the Episcopal Church (which was not divided during the war like other denominations) was just the outfit to make it work. More interestingly, it was for many generations one of the most fully integrated congregations in our denomination, since many escaped or emancipated slaves settled just above the M/D line near there. My former assistant's parents are in the columbarium there, and I will pay my due respects on the morrow.

LC, I hope you tried out the tavern next to the cemetery. (across from where the old visitors center was). They are a nice little inexpensive lunch place with good food. And, on weekend nights they have music. They also have some (very) limited outdoor seating.

Is that your final answer?

...if Regis had had cosmetic surgery...
Oh, yeah. You know how right after an eye job, thepatient has that deer-in-the-headlights look for a while? Regis had that.

I guess I'll be going to check out their burger. Although, now, I'll have 2 places to check out in western md.
the other place being:

Joyce: I can't picture the place you are referring to, though the geography of the place continues to change month to month. I'd love to know more, since I will be going back a couple of more times to gather "sermon fodder."

LC - I'm hoping to get to Gettysburg on Thursday for the day. I will take careful note of what it's called and what street it's on.
You are right, the landscape is changing continously. I think it's in an attempt to return it as much as possible to original site where the battles took place.

Wow is it possible that I've moved to "the big city" just to have my ol' stomping ground get a foodie shout out?
BTW- Airport Inn is hit or miss. I think Nick left and they had a bad spell. Perhaps they are back on the right track?! Try Shepherdstown for a nice meal, the Press Box or the 3 Olives.
