Refilling single-use water bottles

Looking over the comments under the bottled water post, I was struck by how many people refill their empty bottles with tap water (I know I do), but no one mentioned that it's supposed to be a health hazard to refill single-use bottles.

I've read the arguments from both sides. Those who are pro-refilling say there are no health risks if you wash out the bottles with hot, soapy water after every use. Right. If I drained every half-filled bottle I have knocking around the trunk of my car for tennis, which have all been refilled numerous times, I would probably be drinking water from a year ago.

I have no opinion on the chemical-leaching issue because who knows?

You ridickous Americans wioth your steerilizing your lifes and minds. Puritan soapy crazyness. Live life why you look for pain in every day. ?

Whoooooooooooosshhh.......

PA - I loved your book "I don't care, said Pierre". Personally, the potential GI issues can outweigh the pain of cleaning a bottle.

I don't refill the bottles, partly because I don't drink bottled water all that much and also because of the new flimsier bottles (supposedly better for the environment), I think it would probably crack after repeated uses.

Invest in a good stainless steel container, such as Eco-Canteen, and refill it with water that you have filtered.

I refill a Rubbermaid bottle with filtered water from my refrigerator and place it in the freezer overnight. I'm amazed at how many of my coworkers buy bottled water to bring everyday. And I know it's not refilled because it's sealed.

You could always by an Orla Kiely branded Wottle!

I refill 'em twice with filtered water from the fridge and then recycle 'em.

After I lost a nalgene bottle, I went a few months of refilling disposible water bottles (or gatorade bottles) multiple times. I would refill the bottle when needed then recycle the bottle when I started worrying it was too bacterial, usually about a week or week and a half. Appearently I was only supposed to refill a couple of times, but it never made me sick! And now I'm back to a nalgene which I also do not wash out between every use, and that has not made me sick yet either!

elle, you may have been lucky to lose that Nalgene bottle. The older ones were made with BPA, something that has bad long-term consequences for your health. I hope your new bottle was marked "BPA-free." If not, consider tossing it. It may not make you sick now, but later on you might regret using it.

I rinse my bottles. No soap. Just some hot water. There's a cup of water that sits on my desk at work. Rinse it out every so often. Drink water out of it every day. Been doing this for years.

Guess what??? I'm alive and well. Actually healthier than most and very rarely get sick.

People can ingest bacteria all day long and not be visibly ill or otherwise symptomatic. I'll choose to minimize my unsanitary bacterial intake, but that's only my choice and we are all free to make our own choices... :D
Here's a great bottle: linky

I carry sun brew tea in reused bottles because buying packaged tea for as much as a whole BOX of bags seems stupid and wasteful, I use baking soda or vinegar to clean them with no ill effects.

RubyLynda, I seem to recall reading something about bacteria in sun brewed tea recently.

I guess if we gave up some type of food or beverage everytime the alarm sounded we couldn't eat at all!

Anyway, I've already partaken of Red Dye #2, so I'm awaiting the awful effects of that to kick in any time now.

Remember red M&Ms, Joyce?

Not just the red M&Ms, Lissa - red jello too!

Brings to mind that hilarious take-off from those folks at National Lampoon -from Deteriorata: "Gracefully surrender the things of youth: the birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan - and let not the sands of time get in your lunch".

They don't have red jello any more? That was my favourite flavour!

Joyce, do you prefer Hairy Thunderer or Cosmic Muffin?

Lissa, of course there's still red jello - just made with Red Dye #3 or #4 or some # that's not 2!

Hal, I see you have a familiarity with Deteriorata.

"Be comforted that in the face of all aridity and disillusionment
And despite the changing fortunes of time,
There is always a big future in computer main-te-nance."

Take heart in the deepening gloom that your dog is finally getting enough cheese.

Deteriorata!

Its been a long time since I've heard any of that.

Hal, that was one of my favorite lines from it.

How about:
"Know what to kiss - and when. Consider that two wrongs never make a right, but that three do. Wherever possible, put people on hold."

!, indeed, Rob. Deteriorata. I had forgotten that. Now I need to go find a download.

Bucky,
Here's the full text:

Deteriorata

Couldn't find a recording, but then, I didn't look too hard.

"With all its hopes, dreams, promises, and urban renewal, the world continues to deteriorate.

Give up."

Fl Rob, thanks for digging up a text link for us. I just re-read it again, and it's still hilarious. Every time I read it a different line grabs me, but right now I'm laughing at "Know yourself. If you need help, call the FBI."

Thanks, Rob...I had also forgotten that "Remember the Pueblo" was in there.

That's perfect that people can receive the home loans moreover, that opens new possibilities.

Link spam at 9:47 PM! (It's another post by the people who shill home loans, although their English usage is as bad as that of the people who shill termpaper writing services.)
