Monday Morning Quarterbacking: Si Salsa

PX00163_9.JPG

My review of Si Salsa in Pikesville appeared in yesterday's paper. I actually had a very good time there, but you have to go with the mindset of having fun and not worrying too much about authentic Latino cuisine.

And they are not trying to fool you. Our exuberant hostess, for instance, who ran outside with a big smile and opened the door for us when she saw us approaching, was Russian. I'm not sure about our waiter, but he was definitely not Hispanic. ...

I would think now that the weather is good, Si Salsa would be a place to think about eating at just for the patio. I like the way it looks out into the wooded area. (OK, it also looks out onto the small parking lot, but it's on a raised deck, so the effect isn't the same as we discussed in an earlier post.)

Because the photo was taken in April for Table Talk, you don't get the leafy green effect.

If it doesn't have the white cheese dip or rockin' fajitas, the better half and I won't cross the threshold. It looks like they TexMex their queso up with some yellow cheese, chilis, and peppers, and it sounds like the fajitas were meh - so sad.

I'm in the biz. They will have an uphill battle in Pikesville. Tough crowd, bad location. Also, too close to Mari Luna.

Must you have Latino servers to be a mexican restaruant? LOL Yes, being that close to Mari Lunas does take courage. None the less, It is good to see a Latin inspired restaurant not taking the easy way out but actualy trying to modernize mexican food. Try the calimari, It is great.

Nope. My point is they aren't trying too hard to be something they're not, and I admire that. EL

Last time I was at Grimaldi's the front of the house was run by Eastern Europeans, maybe Russians, and all the cooks looked to be from Central America. Still the best pizza I have ever eaten. How many French restaurants have French wait staff?

One thing Si Salsa has going for it is a liquor license. Alot of people want a margarita with their Mexican food. I have seen more than one table get up and leave Mari Luna when it was discovered they did not serve alcohol. Margaritas are difficult, but not impossible, to BYOB.

Good point. EL

How many French restaurants have French wait staff?

Yeah but we have a Spanish Town but no French Town. ¡Olé!

A Mexican restaurant without booze? Ay caramba! I'll choose mediocre Mexican food with hooch over fancy Mexican food sin bebidas. ¡Olé!

Hey Gringo, Mexican food doesn't need to be modernized, just your knowledge does. There is an amazing variety of Mexican food in the different regions South of the Border. ¡Olé!

Mari Luna LATIN Grill DOES have a full liquor license. They took the license from Mari Luna MEXICAN Grill which went back to BYOB which some people prefer

EL -- I think we got richiedad's point the first time around. Six dupes of a post must be a record.

Not at all. One comment of Lissa's posted 15 times. But she assured me it was the blogware's fault. EL

I've been to Mari Luna a thousand times, and not that I'm growing tired of it, but Si Salsa was pretty damn good! My wife doesn't eat much meat so she got some sort of mushroom pastry thingy, and inhaled it! ~Good Times~
I'm not the easiest person to please, and it may not have been what I had expected, but I would definately order the Lamb again. The salsa was alittle wet, but it did the job (yay for free apps).

Agree with you Amasis Perez! Si Salsa is pretty damned good. And the people are really nice with a great wait staff and fantastic bartenders.

I have no vested interest in Si Salsa- this is not a shill post!

Does Mari Luna LATIN Grill have a full liquor license?

Why you gotta yell, baby?

Awful lot of shouting in here tonight!

It did? I did? I might screw up two or three times, but I don't think I have the attention span to post 15 times.

My apologies, regardless.

Perhaps all this shouting is due to all this talk about drinking. I know when I have a lot to drink, I also start yelling.

Love it! Love it! Love it! My family and I have become regulars at this Pikesville Restaurant. Everytime I have been there the experience has been very positive. I just discovered they have smooth jazz and other events. We discovered this by the way of our friends and been there many times since. Keep it up Si Salsa.
