Did you go to the farmers market today?

I didn't. I had some things I had to do, and I just don't enjoy going once the Waverly market gets crowded, so it's pretty much 7 a.m. or nothing. I would go to the one under the viaduct tomorrow, but only if I know there's some local produce worth going for. Is there? Usually there would be, but this summer has had such strange weather I get the feeling that everything is delayed. I'll only be here one more night, so it doesn't make sense for me to trek down there unless I get a vegetable or two for Sunday night supper.

Depends what you are looking for. Last week, there were beets, some asparagus still, peas, squash blossoms, some patty pan and other summer squashes, pea pods, great salad greens and some strawberries. I'm probably leaving stuff out. Still great potatoes from last winter, too.

At the Harbor East farmers market there were zucchini and yellow squash, cucumbers, chard, several kinds of lettuce, sour cherries, blueberries, and some early rather punk-looking broccoli.

Punk broccoli? It slam dances in your stomach? Sleeps on your couch and eats all your food?

Lissa, it looked dangerous enough that I didn't buy any. :-)

I'm a fan of the Harbor East market. It is pretty small but still has everything I am looking for - including Springfield Farms with all their delicious meats.
I've made a pretty good tradition now of getting bagette bread, lettuce, tomatoes, and some bacon from there and having Saturday BLT lunch. Today I added some crabs from Chris' Seafood. Good stuff!

I nominate Lissa's question about punk broccoli for Comment of the Week...

My broccoli went straight to flower, which is pretty enough, but annoying.

Obviously, Eve, you have hippy broccoli.

GrandBoy pointed out that the dog has been lifting his leg on the broc all along, so....maybe just as well......

Bel Air Market Report: "Cinnamon bun" scone and an apple fritter from Green Mountain Bakers and Velma's Pies; family mix lettuce blend, 2 lbs. hydroponic tomatoes, two butterhead lettuces from York County; 1 quart of Quigley green beans (State Fair winners like 12 out of the last 16 years); one loaf of "Great Grains" bread from the Breadery (Ellicott City); fava beans, two heads fresh garlic and bunch of French radishes from Calvert's Gift organic farm; 4 lb. beef chuck roast from Deer Creek Beef (to make the current America's Test Kitchen test recipe); a pound of bacon from Broom's Bloom farm; asparagus from Brad's Produce; Spinach from an unnamed York County farm; and blueberries from a Darlington Orchard.

Now that I can get local chicken at the market (didn't use the one I bought last week) the only thing that's missing is fresh dairy. (Not counting my lack of canning skills to put up my own tomatoes for the winter!)

About $65 dollars today, the same as I spent on the week's groceries at Giant on Friday.

I picked a Rutgers and 2 types of cherry tomatoes, yellow and red from my deck garden on Friday. The rosemary has been good enough for seasoning for several weeks. My parsley plants seasoned my shrimp dish tonight. Sugarsnap peas should be ready this week.

Heirlooms at OM this week!

Loose Canon, your finds from the Bel Air Market sound fabulous--except that I'm dubious about that "Cinnamon bun" scone.

LEC--I have given up on parsley--I just plant it for the bunnies, evidently.

Heirlooms at OM this week!

Sorry, don't know what OM is. Please advise.
Thank you!

Sorry, HiThere - Owings Mills. The small farmers market at the JCC.

I went to the JFX Market at about 8am on Sunday.

I picked up some lettuce, tomatoes, baby squash/zucchini, corn and black bean salsa, blackberries, and fresh peas.

Dahlink ... RE: Cinnamon Bun Scone -- I was dubious when I saw them at first a couple of years ago. But our favorites from Green Mountain Bakers (Fresh Strawberry/White Chocolate) were so good that I had to try one, and they have become my favorite brief case snack. Imagine a typical scone dough, split before baking and slathered with cinnamon bun filling. They are baked and then barely frosted. Another GMB favorite: Cornmeal Blueberry ... but I haven't seen any yet this season.

We support the local farmers @ Waverly Saturday morning and JFX Sunday morning. This week xcellent patty pan, bicolor corn, cherries, cucs, herbs, broc, sweet potatoes, red skins, strawberries, beets, sugar snaps, green tomatoes, wax beans and string beans. Our guest love the local touch @ Regi's in Federal Hill.

the small farmers market at Greenspring station had Stone Mill bakery, bison meat stand, another meat stand and misc items. not a lot, but we are in between seasons
