Talara and my most controversial Top 10 yet

Talara1.jpg

In today's Table Talk I feature the new Talara in Harbor East. One reader noticed I used the alternate spelling for "ceviche" and wrote me an e-mail complaining that it was wrong. (I used "seviche" because that's how Talara's sister restaurant spells its name, and it seemed odd to have two different spellings in the same item.) ...

I sometimes have to make a judgment call on foreign words, and I can't really defend why I do it one way or the other. Nor am I consistent. I just can't make myself, for instance, say "Beijing duck" or "sichuan beef."

Sometimes the copy desk changes my spellings and sometimes not. But by that time, it's out of my hands.

My most controversial Top 10 Tuesday yet appeared in the print edition today. So far I haven't got any nasty e-mails, but I won't be surprised if I do. My guess is that people won't read the intro, and they'll think that the Love It/Hate It comments are mine.

Here's a list I'd like to see: Restaurants that you and Gorelick disagree about. Surely, you can't look at each others' reviews and agree with it all. Let's hear about the intra-office squabble.

I'm sure there are some, but so far I haven't noticed any. We review different kinds of restaurants so I haven't eaten at most of the places he reviews. EL

Splendid idea Monseur Lebey.

Maybe we could get Sun employees to fight each other gladiator-style to the death if (god forbid) there were ever more layoffs. Disharmony for sport is probably a bad idea.

You review different kinds of places? What exactly does that entail?

He gets Latin, you get Chinese?

He gets fine-dining, you get the $9.95 early bird special joints?

Other way round. EL

Au contraire, ~╥╥☺

I have noticed at least two cases in which Sun staffers have voluntarily left in order to spare other colleagues with family obligations who would have been axed otherwise. All I can say is that the world would be a better place if there were more people like that in it.

Agree with you about the mensch quality of many of the Sun staffers, Dahlink.

But Sun Reviewer Throw Down matches! Just think of the possiblities!

I thought the food at Talara was outstanding. The service and atmosphere left a lot to be desired. Granted, I was there for a soft opening, but we had to remind the waitress several times for our drinks and there were out of quite a few drinks on the menu. I also don't know what kind of atmosphere they are going for - hip crowd, hotel crowd, etc. Will definitely go back for the food though.

About this blog
Richard Gorelick was appointed The Baltimore Sun's restaurant critic in September 2010. Before joining the paper staff fulltime, he contributed freelance criticism and features articles about food to area and regional publications. Along the way, he dispatched for short-distance trucking companies, shilled for cultural non-profits, and assisted in cognitive neurology research – never the subject, always the control.

He takes restaurants seriously but not himself, and his favorite restaurant is the one you love, too.
