Saturday morning quarterbacking: the Pub Dog

Can there be Saturday morning quarterbacking? I was at the beach on Thursday, and I didn't get around to linking to Other Reviewer Richard's review of the Pub Dog in Federal Hill.
Mmmm. A soft pretzel appetizer followed by a pizza. I wonder if anyone actually orders that except restaurant critics.
I knew the place had changed its name from the Thirsty Dog awhile back, but I never knew why. Anybody? I really like the name Thirsty Dog for some reason.
Have you noticed how this morning's posts are starting to have a dog theme? I promise you it's merely coincidence.

Thirsty Dog was a registered trademark of a Microbrewery based in Ohio. They filed a trademark infringement against the pub a few years ago.
Thanks! EL

I'll bet they have beer there. Say, you know who rarely gets to enjoy beer? Kids. If only they would invent a beer for kids. Ta da! [Pimp alert] See my new post on Midnight Sun on a Japanese product called Kids Beer
Kidsbeer's slogan is "Even kids cannot stand life unless they have a drink,"
Delightful

I go to the Pub Dog in Columbia and my wife and I always get the pretzels. I always have a pizza and she sometimes has salad and sometimes a pizza. We would go there more often if they had sandwiches on the menu but for a pizza/beer fix it is great. While the beer is not as good as Victory it is miles ahead of budmillercoors. I obviously like it alot more than Richard but then I wouldn't think of Pub Dog and gourmet food as going together so I wasn't disappointed. I would comment on the two stars for food but I have learned that lesson. I would like to know where he thinks the three and four star pizza and beer joints are in the area. I know I can travel to Downingtown, PA for cask conditioned IPA and wood fired pizza that is better than Pub Dog but for the combination of good beer and good pizza this is the best I have come across in the Baltimore area.

If only there was a way to check if someone else was using a name before you start a business. If only ...

Barney Google -- there is a way to check on name usage, namely, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website's search page, which shows the following trademark registration results for "Thirsty Dog".

I am starting to confuse OMG with Dan Rodricks promoting his radio show....

I love Thirsty Dog's thai chicken pizza with peanuts! It is outstanding. I also like that they serve all their drinks as twins, so you get 2 waters, 2 sodas or 2 beers at the same time. I just wish with the 2 beers you could get 2 different flavors, I always debate if I want peach, raspberry or blueberry, and wish I could get 2 different not the same. And, on principle, I still call it Thirsty Dog!

Oh Eve, how could you? It's not like I make any money off of Sam's blog. I'm just pointing people to Sam's blog, who is a good friend of this blog. It's possible that my friends here might like my posts more than the crew there. Who knows? It's a natural tendency for a writer to want people to read what he spent time creating.
I have no idea when he is going to run what.
Now I will mope in a corner for a while. Another desperate attempt to be loved by invisible strangers fails again...'

Owlie, if you really be like Rodericks, you're going to need to start providing jobs to ex-cons. Perhaps some former inmates could be guest posters on Owl Meat Apocrypha. I'm sure there are some prisoner poets that are looking for work. What's Merle Haggard doing now?
Posted by: Robert of Cross Keys | May 23, 2009 9:52 PM
Rodrick's has been strip-mining that vein forever it seems. He edits comments on his blog and rejects ones that disagree with him. I never look at his blog nor his column.

they serve 2 beers at once? doesn't one just sit there getting warm while you drink the other? am I missing the 'benefits' of this?
Posted by: Bourbon Girl | May 23, 2009 11:09 PM
doesn't one just sit there
Nah, you drink from one, then from the other, then from the first, then from the other...they're just 8 oz. each, so both shouldn't take more than, what? 10 minutes, tops?

Swerving off but.....
every morning at precisely 10:30 a.m. my dog (boxer) trots to me and licks my knee. That is the signal he wants his water bowl refilled. Now, this may sound strange to all, but I cannot resist saying to him "Are those pretzels making you thirsty?"
The episode of Seinfeld where Kramer used that line has stuck in my head for WAAAAYYYYYYYYY too long!
Only releveance to this forum is pretzels and a thirsty dog....sorry for the digression.

What's the deal with corn nuts??
No seriously, what's the deal with serving 2-8oz beers and calling that a deal? They must have studied the Chile's philosophy of promoting customer confusion. For some reason, every time I enjoy their craft selection I always think of their poor dishwasher.
Also, is it too much to ask that a bar not smell like a bathroom?
Posted by: lab rat | May 24, 2009 9:31 PM
lab rat, no, I would say that is not too much to ask!
Posted by: Dahlink | May 25, 2009 8:07 AM
lab rat, if you went to a bar and it smelled like a bathroom why would you ever go back? I know the Columbia location does not smell like a bathroom. I don't know why they came up with the two for one idea but if it bothered me as much as it does you I wouldn't go back. If you notice even the water is served two at a time. It is just a gimmick.

I was thinking about this review and realized that I would never have gone to the Dog Pub if I had read this first. I would have missed good pizza and beer and Dog Pub would have two fewer regular customers.

No, I think it was Peru. Or Argentina.

I am still wondering where Richard goes when he wants good pizza and good beer.

I enjoy this place and was hoping the smell was unusual. Every time I've been the ground level is unpleasent, but that's what's great about a rowhouse bar...there's always an upstairs.

EEL --
The two stars for food might seem stingy, I realize. In this case it reflects mostly my opinion that the pizza at this "pizza and drafthouse" was just slightly better than mediocre. I didn't use that word, but that's what I was trying to convey. I wouldn't send a friend there for the pizza, but I might recommend it as a fun place to try.
I don't have an answer to the question of where I personally go for good pizza and good (I assume you mean home-brewed) beer.
I'd rather go somewhere for great pizza and good (though not home-brewed) beer (Joe Squared), or no beer at all (Isabella's).
But I think I did a good job of telling those people who do want a friendly pub-like place to get good (or okay) pizza and good (home-brewed) beer that they have a place to go get it.

As for the "drinks served in pairs" gimmick, this is because the idea of the Thirsty Dog (nee Pub Dog) was based off a place in NYC called McSorley's.
McSorley's is the same basic premise - menus is essentially just pizza and beers served in pairs. The staff also have a reputation for being surly (not down right mean, just a bit gruff).
There is actually a nice old photo of McSorley's displayed at Thirsty Dog.
Another neat decorating touch at Thirsty Dog, by the back table of the lower level (above the fire place) there is a cute photo of a dog lying on his back, legs asunder, cooling off his naughty bits with the breeze of an old fan. The brand name of the old fan escapes me, but right next to the photo, is an identical fan.

I do like Joe Squared pizza. Normally go at lunch so no drinking. The one evening I was there they were out of most draft beer. I still wonder why they don't offer more locally brewed selections. Good beer doesn't have to be brewed in house. If Joe Squared offered a selection of Victory or Dogfish Head beer on tap (or better on cask) I would go to no other place. I like the Dog Pub and will continue to eat there more than Joe Squared mainly because of the location (Columbia) and the parking. Not being a city dweller I can't parallel park. I do hope your review doesn't hurt them too bad since I would hate to see them close.

Pub Dog's pizza is no different than Joe Corbi's pizza kits. The place has great beer choices and I like the staff, but they are not a pizza place when you want pizza. I would call it a place to drink with food if you can't drink on a empty stomach.

EEL, I don't think I could touch the keyboard if I thought a negative review of mine would ever seriously hurt a person's business. I think the subject of this review will continue to thrive.
