Mount Washington cafe closes its doors
Glasz Cafe in Lake Falls Village closed last Saturday. Three years ago Classic Catering Company bought it as a pilot program for a line of cafes. In this era of retrenchment that wasn't going to happen, so Classic decided not to renew its lease.
I called the management company to see if anyone there could tell me what might go in that space. I liked sitting at the outdoor tables with a latte this time of year, so I'm bummed to see it go.
Unfortunately everyone in the company's retail division seems to be at a convention and no one could tell me anything; but when I hear anything, I'll let you know.

I drove by there today and my wife said, what's the big thank you sign on the window at the Glasz Café?
As a general rule, the appearance of a thank you sign is not a good sign for any business.
I apologize for not giving you credit for alerting me to this in the first place. Thanks. EL

I vote for a coffee shop.
"Coffee drinkers, rejoice! The heavenly brew, once deemed harmful to health, is turning out to be, if not quite a health food, at least a low-risk drink, and in many ways a beneficial one. It could protect against diabetes, liver cancer, cirrhosis and Parkinson's disease." - Los Angeles Times
Next week: "Study reveals geese prefer foie gras treatments to typical feeding routines. They find them therapeutic and give their lives greater meaning."

That's ok EL, I don't need the credit. It is not as if we all earn stamps or D@L bucks for alerting the sandbox to restaurant news.
Although, maybe we should. Say provide three notifications of restaurant closings and get a coupon free bloomin onion at Outback or provide an update on the next foie gras protest and get a dinner out with Springs1.

Oh RoCK, you are so on to something. I have been trying to figure out a way to make $ off of commenting on D@L.
Not that I'd ever make a restaurant recommendation. Last thing I want is to be accused of shilling.

It isn't shilling if any professional or personal relationships are disclosed.

I vote for a GOP-themed cafe called the Fashion Bug or Chess King

If commenting reaped rewards, I would be rich!

Seldom enjoyed the food, never enjoyed the service and the prices were way out of line for what you got.

It is sad to see the cafe close... but there is a new Coffee place not too far away. It is called Roland Park Bagel Co. and they have an awesome outdoor patio where you can sit and enjoy a latte or coffee and a bagel.

I must agree with Wanderer. The food always looked or sounded better than it actually was.

On most things Glasz was just like any other cafe. The exception was the candy matzohs available at Passover. They were good enough to make this shaygitz think about converting.

If that lawyer-franchisee put Daily Grind there instead of up Falls Rd. (and executed at least passably with no attitude) he woulda done better.

The Starbucks next to Whole Foods is "not too far away", IMO. Coldspring Lane, not really.
"awesome outdoor patio" over-looking Spaghetti Eddie's parking lot. Awesome, indeed.
Jennifer McIllwain is a shill. Check it out:

Hate to see it go. I hadn't been in a while I but enjoyed its outdoor seating. Yes, it was next the parking lot, but I'll take almost any outdoor space over dining inside during the warm season. The food was passable; the prices were high but not excessively so.

Hey Jennifer--will you stand by my car on one of the residential sidestreets along the strip of S'Ghetti/Loco/RPBagel as there's no parking when I need it? Will you shield my sensitive eyes and ears from the cranky owner berating the minimum-wage counter guy for not knowing the POS system? Will you make the bagels taste at least as good as those at Goldberg's or even Wegman's? You see, there's risk in being a shill-in-hiding, for both you and your client/boss. If you were an honest and forthright flack, we wouldn't feel compelled to bring these things up, even though they are true. This is called balance. It's what journalism used to espouse, and this is sort of a newspaper site.

Bonjour bakery is right next door (sort of) to where Glasz cafe -- they have good coffee, espresso and yummy baked goods/pasty. I prefer Atwaters coffee and there's a new Atwaters down the street (but no espresso) off Falls, at the street/intersection where Daily Grind used to be (they are now closed....)

There's an Atwater's off of Falls? Does anybody know, Falls and what? I am so there! Wish it was Greenspring Station but I'm sure it's further up.
It's across from Princeton Sports, near Bare Hills Tennis. EL

I think that was an Atwater's that I saw in the corner of the Kenilworth parking lot.
Posted by: Eve | May 20, 2009 9:59 AM
That makes three Atwater's--any more out there?
Posted by: Dahlink | May 20, 2009 2:49 PM
If you've got three Atwater's, why, that is an organization.
Posted by: Lissa | May 20, 2009 8:42 PM
Eve -- you're right about Kenilworth Mall, where Atwater's occupies the stand-along building once occupied (many years ago) by First Federal Savings and Loan of Annapolis.
Dahlink -- the Atwater's website shows just the three locations. FWIW, they refer to the Bare Hill location (for which you must scroll down the box on the page) as Atwater's Ploughboy Kitchen.
