More on the new restaurant in Canton
I've found out the name, at least, of the new restaurant at 938 S. Conkling St. It's the Blue Hill Tavern. As you can see from the photo, it's not quite ready to open.
The food will be "contemporary American cuisine," not a bad choice in this economy.
I heard from Mel Carter, whom I talked to last year about the restaurant space. In fact, he took this photo with his iPhone.
He won't give an exact date for the opening, but he says I'll be able to watch the Fourth of July fireworks from the back deck.
The restaurant will seat around 180 and have two bars, a 600-square-foot second-flour lounge area, and eight tables on a second-floor "veranda." There will be a 15-seat chef's table and a private dining room for 50 people.
Here's what Carter had to say in his e-mail: ...

sounds very very interesting. I hope they follow the #1 rule for restaurants.....serve good food consistently.... Sounds like it will be a nice space.

That sounds huge.

Sure is an ugly building, though.

That building does not look Baltimore. Looks like something you'd see in the San Fernando Valley.

It doesn't fit its surroundings well at all. It's not in the prettiest block in the area, but even there it seems to glaringly stick out.

Yes, it does have that generic California thing going on, doesn't it?
Posted by: Dahlink | May 19, 2009 6:06 AM
I can't wait! Its about time Baltimore brought some class to Friday and Saturday nights for the mid 20 to 30 crowds. Its going to be amazing and I am so excited ... p.s doesn't fit its surroundings...try domain about a block and half down...upscale/luxury apartments - i think it will do just fine.

Class, Canton and the mid-20 to 30 crowds do not belong together.
Posted by: Lissa | May 19, 2009 9:35 AM
shill alert? Sirens going off - anybody else?
Posted by: Joyce W. | May 19, 2009 9:38 AM
Don't even bother, Owl.

Allison,
Maybe one of the specials could be meathead monday.
Posted by: RayRay | May 19, 2009 10:05 AM
Personally I’m excited for something new in the area. And why knock it before trying it?
Posted by: Sammy B-more | May 19, 2009 10:33 AM
As long as they are hot meatheads!
Posted by: Anonymous | May 19, 2009 10:34 AM
I think it looks great, i cant wait to have a new spot in Baltimore to go too!
Posted by: Jill | May 19, 2009 10:48 AM
I am excited to check it out!!

I'm not necessarily saying I wouldn't try the place because it's ugly. I'm just saying it's ugly.

It looks like a medical office building to me.
Posted by: hon | May 19, 2009 11:33 AM
Actually, I'm now starting to lean towards *not* trying it, because of all the annoying shills.
Posted by: Hal Laurent | May 19, 2009 11:37 AM
If this new place is going after the meatheads, I wonder how the Bay Cafe will respond. It will be on!

Hi we're Amanda, Jill, Sammy and Allison and LOVE stuff.
Canton + Class = null set
That thing is hideous, even for Canton. It looks like a motel in Dewey Beach.
I suggest the following name: Upscale Flip-flops including the Classy Cutoffs Lounge featuring Canadian Bacon the Bryan Adams cover band. Here's the motto: Like the Bay Cafe without the sand. Other possible names: Doll Hair and Tramp Stamps.
I'm just plain mean today. It's been 28 hours, I wonder if anyone posted yesterday's Midnight Sun comments yet?

Perhaps they will have good liver.

Looks like more Brutalism architecting that disses the neighborhood's rowhouse character. Big question is where the heck we gonna park if it turns out it's good and we're hip enough? It's worse around there than Salt or Saute. Speaking of the latter, the dinner plates have been looking good there amidst the din, have they stabilized?
Posted by: chowsearch | May 19, 2009 3:07 PM
Owlie, I posted but I have no idea what's going on with my comments.
I won't be posting here for a while -- I'm not contributing much anyway, I fear.

Just seeing your name brightens my day YumPo. Have a good trip.
Posted by: Owl Meat Gravy | May 19, 2009 3:36 PM
Agree the look is less than thrilling. Maybe they will sass it up a bit with some finishing touches. I have seen it recently and they do have a rock wall on the lower facade. Parking is quite good near Conkling and Dillon. There is angled parking across the street and several very large lots with hundreds of free spots within 2 blocks.

1) Who cares what it looks like? So its not an updated brick rowhouse - as long as its not run down or vacant, and is clean on the inside, then I'll definitley give it a chance. I'm all for the historic brick for which Baltimore is known but I'm not opposed to some other construction type.
2) Parking is certainly easier on that side of Canton then it is near Saute, or Salt in Butcher's Hill. If you cross Conkling and get into Brewer's Hill, street parking is much more readily available than the "heart" of Canton near Saute.
I'm looking forward to trying this place.

Ston said: Who cares what it looks like?
I do, for one. I don't appreciate ugly suburban architecture invading the city where I live.

Well, it is pretty clear that this new place is going to be the cool place for all the cool people. So it goes without saying that I'll be there. In fact I might start hanging out there before it even opens.

RoCK -- what has gotten into you?
Posted by: Laura Lee | May 19, 2009 9:13 PM
RoCK, I totally agree. I'll meet you there on Friday around 6. Bring a lawn chair, Oakleys, flip flops, sea shell necklace, at least one rubber wrist bracelet (Hey man, it's for cancer. I don't care, you still look like an idiot. Jewelry doesn't cure cancer.) Dude, duuude, duuuuuuuuude
Posted by: Owl Meat Gravy | May 19, 2009 9:46 PM
Poor RoCK. I think we infected him last night on Facebook or something. He's been dancing around all day to bad 70's pop.
Posted by: Lissa | May 19, 2009 9:57 PM
I'm not sure what's gotten into me, although for reasons I'm not sure of I did eat three hotdogs today. Maybe it is the nitrates?
Posted by: Robert of Cross Keys | May 19, 2009 9:58 PM
RoCK has been exposing his wild side lately, especially on Facebook.
I blame Haldeman.
Posted by: Hal Laurent, COPFTC | May 19, 2009 10:28 PM
COPFTC? Federal Trade Commission police?
Posted by: Lissa | May 19, 2009 10:53 PM
Well, I have the lawn chair. I also have the flip flops, which I normally only wear in campground showers. The other items, particulalry the puka shell necklace, I'm going to have buy. Where do I get a puka shell necklace anyway, I mean other the islands?

Lissa -- Hal defined COPFTC at this post.

RoCK,
Don't forget your BSSC t-shirt.
Posted by: RayRay | May 20, 2009 7:59 AM
Ah, thank you, hmpstd. That post is hard to keep up with.
Hal, can I join your club? We can have non-meetings, and a secret wave only done from at least a mile away.
Puka beads...weren't those big in about 1975?
Posted by: Lissa | May 20, 2009 9:23 AM
Lissa, we COPFTC need to stick together.

As long as it's not abandoned, I'm good with it.

Was hoping that this place was going to have a dance floor! Canton NEEDS a place to go dancing! This place looked so big from outside, thought it would finally be here....

Lissa, I assume it's "por-ketta." YumPo, is that correct? Hurry on back!

More specifically it's por-KET-ta.

Mmmmm - porchetta. I had that sammich at Isabella's recently, branching out from the old standbys, the ICC and the Isabella - dee-licious. Skip the Hagen.
