Harborque opens in Locust Point

Andrew alerted me to the fact that Harborque opened Friday in Locust Point (1421 Lawrence St., 410-685-7675).

First of all, catchy name. You've got to wonder why no one has thought of it before. When I Googled Harborque, I was surprised to find there was no chatter about it on the 'net. Usually new places, especially new barbecue places, have people in a twitter.  (Can I still use that expression?)

I picked up the phone and talked to the owner briefly. He says the place specializes in Carolina barbecue. It's BYOB and seats 30 inside, with 30 to 35 more seats on the deck. The motto is "Carolina 'cue with a view."

BYOB for BBQ? Does that mean I can bring my own bottles of bourbon and Cheerwine?

I was just glad to see that they kept the snowball stand next-door. There were a couple of people on the deck when I drove by this afternoon (Mon.).

Ordered a Carolina pulled pork sandwich on Sat. It was so overstuffed i had to eat it with a fork! Very very good, i would recommend to anyone looking to satisfy that BBQ itch.

I hope they haven't turned over the menu entirely. I will miss the fava bean falafel that they had there in previous incarnations.

OK, now I get it! When I read the name in your headline, I pronounced it Har-BORK which is darned unattractive.

Went there for dinner tonight, it was great! Owner was very friendly and service was fast.

My wife had the Pulled Pork Sandwich w/Fries and Mac&Cheese ($7.99). It was really tasty and piled high as James already noted.

I had the Rib/Chicken Combo ($14.99) and it did not disappoint, there was so much food, I have enough for lunch tomorrow. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is hungry for BBQ.

Oh, and the menu is completely new...

Went there opening day for lunch on Friday, and I'll definitely be going back. People behind the counter were very friendly, and the pulled pork was amazing. Try it with the spicy bbq and pig pickin' sauce mixed together.

From the TV set I have learned there at least three types of Carolina BBQ. What is the sauce like at this place?

Andrew and James seem to really like the place! How shilly.

After reading MD Canon's comment, I wondered about what kind of reaction I would get, the next time I'm down in Carolina or Tennessee, if I went to a BBQ joint and asked the pit master for a fava bean falafel.

I did the same thing as Eve, and since "bork" is computerese for "broken," I was very confused.

Is this the tasty Caroline que with the vinegar based sauce?

Yeah lame shills. I don't have the energy for this.

Maybe the Muppets' Swedish Chef works there ... bork bork bork

Worn out from the bbq today Owlie?

It was fun playing cornhole in the sunny green suburbs. Too bad you didn't try a grilled oyster - they were really good, especially the garlic butter ones..

It was pretty funny when Amanda chased you down and tried to shove one in your mouth.... at least until you tripped over and into the kiddie pool.

And then it started to rain.... and we were trapped indoors playing gin rummy and boggle and scrabble (the words you chose then, dear, i think were disturbing to the kids)

Oh and then there was the fight over you contacting your old girlfriend (instigated by Amanda, thanks so much, I didn't even know about that), at which point, again because of your language, we were (per usual, and thank god) invited to depart... good times... am i forgetting anything?

That sounds about right, except for the last part which is an absolute fiction. Sending a note to an old friend on Facebook is nothing to get jealous over, especially since it's completely public on FB. Catherine lives a million miles away and we more or less can't stand each other. You know you are now and forever my one and only, alma de mi corazon. Duh.

B>)

P.S. I did try one of the bacon wrapped grilled oysters when you were "resting your eyes" in the hammock on the porch.

All in all a wonderful day. I'm so glad you were there.this year).

(she exaggerates a lot)

They don't know you're mostly joking BG, maybe they do. And this on the day when I had a guest post that was sincere and lacking all humor. Eh, thanks for balancing things out.

Oh and "suq" is not a dirty word. I checked my Scrabble dictionary when I got home –Boooooourbon girl. And neither is "nards". You're just pissed because I beat you with the triple word. Ha!

Sweet dreams my love. Dream of me.

"Suq" (pronounced "sook") is not a dirty word at all. In Bahrain (and no doubt, a lot of other Muslim countries), the suq is a bazaar or marketplace where you can buy anything from food to gold to stereo equipment.

It was fun playing cornhole in the sunny green suburbs.

This made me laugh out loud, and I'm still chuckling. I guess the word has a new meaning these days.

Oh and another thing goofball, I told Catherine to check out this blog and Funtastic Thursdays so, duh, she's going to see my annoying public devotion to you. That's not exactly the way to woo another women. Oh god, why am I even saying this. You drive me crazy woman! Arg, I know you're just teasing me. I think that's why ... I lost my train of thought. Good night sweetheart.

PCB Rob - I'm surprised you don't know about cornhole, as it is a popular bean bag game in the South and at the beach.

Get your mind out of the gutter, Sir.

(though, yes, thinking of Beavis, I crack up all the time playing)

BG,
I hadn't heard about the beanbag game at all, and when I read your mention of the game, I thought "huh?"

down here, the only games played are skimboarding and "which one of us can drink more beer than the other?" I guess since beer on the beach is legal here, people go nuts.

Sounds like you had a grand time at the party anyhow.

I'm with you, Eve. Har-Bork? That sounds delicious. Harbor-Q phonetically rolls of the tongue nicely. It looks like my mom's phonetic issues are contagious. I would snicker ever time she tried to pronouce Gardel's. This is great news to start the work week. I'm ready for an in-town Q fix!

I got carryout yesterday. Turkey sandwich is ok, chicken is good, ribs are just ok. Mac & Cheese is great, beans are good, collards and potato salad are meh. I know I should have gotten pork, but my wife wanted turkey and i wanted to try the ribs. Food was good enough that i'll go back to try the pulled pork and sausage.

I'm planning a BBQ tour of Baltimore. We've got some places picked out -- Big Bad Wolf, Andy Nelsons, and Mr. Chelsea's BBQ. Any other suggestions of where to go?

Rebecca - Try out Shorty's. It's on Falls road just north of Padonia in this unassuming old gas station. Great stuff all around.

"gin rummy and boggle and scrabble"

Sounds like it got pretty crazy. I hope the cops weren't called. I better check the police blotter.

Another Shorty's fan here. The guy makes a killer overstuffed pulled pork sandwich. Almost as good as the pulled pork bbq my daughter dished up while we braved the rain on her backyard deck yesterday.

do they still have hookas there?

(probably not i'm guessing)

I've enjoyed that location in the previous two iterations - Alladin's being my favorite - I'm pretty excited that they still maintain BYOB status. The "view" over there isn't necessarily great but sitting outside with your friends and swilling cheap beer with BBQ - can't argue one bit.

I read it HarborKAY. I was very confused.

You should also try Rub for your BBQ tour - I'm a fan of their brisket.

Que What?

Que pasa?

Sean, before Chick-fil-a was everywhere I saw one in Florida and kept thinking it was chickfil- aah. I kept thinking now, THAT makes NO sense at all!

RUB????? I think not, the only thing good there were the drinks.

har- b que...what's the problem- it is after all baltimore.

Poor Owl is always tangled up in blue. But that's his choice.

I'm an optimist.

I went there today and did a review on Chowhound:
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/623783

EL, Have you ever done a Top 10 on barbecue joints?

Trouble, are there 10 BBQ joints in town?

Big Bad Wolf
Charcoal Grill
Andy Nelson's
Rub
Harborque
JB's Smokehouse
Corner Stable
Charcoal Deli
Charred Rib
Chaps

A couple others have recently closed (Alabama BBQ and I think the Ray Lewis enterprise.)

And I know there are others that have been mentioned here, maybe a couple near/in Catonsville.

Chaps is pit beef. Pit beef isn't que. I

Neither Corner Stable nor Charred Rib use smoke so I don't consider them q. When I to a q place for the first time I look for piles of wood and sniff for smoke.

Dotson's on Furnace Branch has pretty good meats, but I'm not really a fan of their sides.
