Is the Bayou Cafe closed?

Now I'm hearing that the Bayou Cafe on the Avenue at White Marsh closed for good Saturday. For once, it sounds more like a lease problem than the economy. Anybody know any more? My e-mail has gone unanswered, and the phone rings without being picked up, but the Web site doesn't suggest it's gone.

I was told by a friend that it closed but the owners and a new partner will soon reopen it with a different format.

I might be in the minority here, but I liked their Cajun food.

Curious to see how the re-invention goes.

Speaking of closed, what the F about our JMc? (McIntyre). I'm heartbroken. I couldn't say enough great things about JMc - reasonable guardian of our language, gentleman in the truest sense, charming, funny, gracious, and great taste in bourbon.

And, where are we going to go now to cause trouble when things are slow here?? Wordville was always the second best home.

I feel like I've lost a friend and I didn't even know the gentleman personally. I hate the Sun for taking him away from us. Hopefully, he'll still run his blog elsewhere and let us know where it is.

I went once for lunch for business. Left thinking too much flour in the roux, too much salt in everything else. Did like the high backed booths for conversation.

For once, I am happy about a restaurant closing. Overpriced, terrible food. They have outdoor space (I love eating outside), I really hope they put something better there.

There was a reason that on days when the Brick Station was overflowing the Bayou Cafe stayed empty. MD Canon and Carey are both right on the money.

I saw Bourbon Girl's comment and was like, Huh?
I had to go see for myself. I can't believe that Wordville is gone!

I liked visiting there a lot.

I hope he lets us know where the next Wordville will pop up. I'm guessing not on Fark though.

Wordville is closed. Once more, I'm bereft.

Back in the aforementioned Red Brick Station overflowing days, I went over to Bayou Café instead of waiting in line. I only did that once or twice. The only specific that I can remember is too much salt. I have a vague memory nudge there was also something about the service.

I hate to see any business go belly up, but the "the owners and a new partner" will need more than just a new format.

I hope he lets us know where the next Wordville will pop up.

Perhaps it will be listed in Wikipedia.

BG, I was floored when I saw your comment and quickly clicked over to Wordville. I don't understand why they would do this. I know, it's always the bottom line, but Mr. McIntyre is the kind of person The Sun should be fighting to keep.

More evidence that so few of TPTB care about good writing and editing anymore, and in making sure those skills are taught to new journalists.

Report: 'Baltimore Sun' Laying Off 15 Editors?

By Joe Strupp

Published: April 29, 2009 10:25 AM ET

NEW YORK The layoff ax may bey falling at The Baltimore Sun, with various reports of mid-level editors being let go and rumors of a guild layoff pending.

The Web Site DCRTV reported that 15 middle and top-level editors were given pink slips. The report stated: "The casualties include: Deputy Managing Editor Paul Moore, Editorial Page Editor Ann LoLordo, Op-Ed Editor Larry Williams, Med/Science Editor Patricia Fanning, Sports editors Ray Frager and George VanDaniker, Copy Desk Chief John McIntyre, Systems Editor Steve Auerweck, three bureau chiefs (leaving none), Regional Editor Jay Apperson, and Photo Assigning Editor Chuck Weiss.

"All editors were told to leave the building immediately," it added. "A security guard was stationed on the skywalk between the building and the employee parking garage. Rumor has it the Guild employees will get layoff notices this week."

"All editors were told to leave the building immediately,"

MCINTYRE WAS GIVEN THE BUM'S RUSH??? I am so furious...I cannot finish this sentence.

That's disgusting. Is that an honorable way to treat people?

What in this Twitter world there is no need for copy editors? The Sun needs more copy editors and less or is it fewer (if we had a copy editor around here he could answer that) B.

I'm with Eve!! What a terrible way to treat a long-time staff member.

It is standard to walk people who are being laid off out the door, security personnel optional.

I am still furious with EDS for not letting me wave goodbye to my team (let alone say it).

security? because the editors might become angry and verbally abuse them?

They are afraid the person being fired will make a scene. One must avoid making (the HR people) anyone feel uncomfortable at all costs.

If we had socialism, this kind of thing would be illegal.

Rather than an HR embarrassment thing, I think those escorted out were evacuated (military jargon here) so they couldn't, in a vengeful way, wreak havoc on the paper's computer systems.

Which is a terrible way to treat such folk. In my mind, John McI is a very honorable person and would have just packed up his stuff and left quietly.

Next time I'm in town, should Mr. McI be in the Hamilton Tavern, I will buy him a drink to thank him. I am sure there are others on this blog who would do the same.

Cheers John, and best of luck!

If my last post is repeated several time, I apologize.

The blogware is acting up again.

RE: John ... you know, Omaha just keeps looking better and better!

yes it is closed, I tend bar at changs across the street and had a friend that tended bar over there, he knew about it 6 months ago. I'm glad it's gone, the food was really bad, and I went a couple times just to make sure it wasnt an "off" nite, it wasn't.

the baltimoron,
Did you tip? How much? Did you use a credit card? Did you tip in cash? How bad was the food? Was it overcooked? Was it oversalted?Did you order decaf and get regular?

Absolutely appalling. Escorted from the premises by security guards? What did management have to fear from these nice people? What has become of common courtesy, decency, and civility, especially towards loyal employees who have worked hard for many years and have done nothing wrong?

My employer is certainly not perfect, but having lived through many rounds of layoffs in the past, it has always treated the people it was forced to lay off with dignity.

Bucky,
Prof. McIntyre is approaching 100 posts.

If the company cared about the paper/people, they could have disallowed the axed talent's computer access and had an exit ambassador accompany them, without a cop, as they gathered their things to make sure they didn't kill the head of HR as they said some pleasant goodbyes. But the Sun has been this way since Reg Murphy: the creative talent is the enemy--much as a robot disdains carbon-based wetware. Welcome to the free world, Sun staffers--we salute you.

RayRay, you're on a roll!

I'm not entirely happy with the sniping at Baltimoron. Yeah, he or she downloaded a bit hard on us last night/this morning, but it was about stuff we've talked about and asked for input on.

This is a safe place to give back a little to annoying customers. And some of us are damned annoying at times.

Serving is a very, very hard job.

Lissa,
Last night I started to feel a little guilty about my tone in responding to the baltimoron. I know that serving is a very difficult profession, and knowing this I generally tip appropriately ( usually between 25 and 30%). That said some of the statements by the baltimoron were outrageous and bordered on illegal. Specifically regarding padding the bill by overcharging for wine, serving regular when decaf is ordered and various other tactics to get back at "lousy tippers". Also the attack on EL's professionalism regarding Other Reviewer Richards review was uncalled for. The link to the actual review was clearly labeled in the post. Sometimes someones snarkiness gets my hackles up and I become snarky as well. My sincere apologies to all who were offended.

RayRay, that's the way I approached it as well. To me, the unwarranted attack on Dear Leader was the tipping (no pun intended) point. Everybody is entitled to an opinion, but nobody is entitled to personal attacks.

RayRay, I thought your approach was actually rather charming, in an odd, demented sort of way. mmmmmmcorn said what needed to be said much less bluntly than I had written and only did not post because I felt she'd handled it.

Eve,
This is not the first time I've been told that I'm odd and demented.:-). I logged on yesterday morning and read the first post by the baltimoron. As I continued to read subsequent posts I got a little miffed, especially at the attack on EL. I know that EL is a big girl and can take care of herself, but ... well I tend to respond to snarkiness with snarkiness, and then regret it later. Anyway, I really hope I didn't offend anyone too much, and that tb and hhh continue to voice their opinions here.

Oh, and I'll continue to be odd, demented, maybe a little charming, but not TOO snarky. (Just a little).:-)

For what it's worth, I felt RayRay and mmmcorn did the snarking was warranted by the situation and thus saved me a day or two to compose some very good snarkiness for the next occassion. Well done, friends, you beat me to the punch.

Stay the course RayRay and stay indignant about gardens (wrong blog)
