Comforting food in difficult times

Sarah KK told me she had tears running down her face her whole long commute home, including a stop at the Giant for cans of tomato soup to go with the grilled cheese sandwiches her husband was making. I told her I had had pizza and angel food cake and nothing else for dinner.

I've been doing a lot of fried rice lately, and wanting Lebanese.

Maybe downscale comfort food will be the new trend.

roast beef/bacon/cheddar roll-ups, martini w/garlic stuffed olives.

These are sad times -- so many wonderful people leaving The Sun. Has a comprehensive list of the latest cuts been published anywhere? Every time I hear another name, I'm shocked. I can hardly imagine the place without some of these people.

Hang in there. I hope your broad and loyal audience and the great success of D@L insulates you somewhat from the bloodbath and brings you some comfort.

Elizabeth, I've worked in a department where morale had reached an all time low before and it sucked! You remaining soldiers certainly have my deepest sympathy for having to go through these events of late.

Meanwhile, I find that in times of stress, my favorite comfort foods tend to be those homey type stews, soups, etc. And, I begin baking, like a crazed person. I over bake and give the goodies away to everyone because misery loves calories!

Nothing and no one can take away from us the sense of camaraderie and memory of shared experiences during our time in The Sun.

Blue cheese burger, fries with three separate pours of ketchup to get enough, and two beers at Mick O'Shea's.

I was in tears myself last night over Mr. McIntyre and the poor Sun's continuing demise. Disappointed to read details in the BBJ and not the Sun, however.

It is a sad state of affairs when intelligent, creative people are losing their jobs and incompetent idiots like paris hilton are making millions.

Sounds delicious! Sometimes that's what you gotta do. :)

Lately, I find myself eating peanut butter and butter sandwiches, which I never, ever even think to eat.

On the drive in this morning, YPR certainly wasn't giving Sun management any love. According to YPR, there were 3 sports reporters and a photographer in the press box at the O's game (3 reporters for 1 game??) who got phone calls telling them to go home, they no longer had jobs. Classy. Very classy.

I felt like someone had socked me in the stomach when I was listening to the report on WYPR this morning. The horrible way in which the news was delivered, especially to the three sports reporters, is shameful.

It's criminal what this paper has become. From one of the top-rated papers in the US to a laughing stock.

Saw NBea Toms reciepe for Beatrice Chicken in the Sun last night. Its just like what my mother made as Hot Chicken Salad.. It would say any reciepe that calls for corn flakes and cream of mushroom soup is considered comfort food

It is absolutely outrageous that the Sun had people like Ann Lolordo, Eileen Canzian and John McIntyre escorted from the premises by security guards. I hope the same happens to Monty Cook when his time comes.

(I am not now, nor have I ever been, an employee of the Baltimore Sun.)

I should say that it was misreported that security guards escorted people from the premises. They were just posted at the skywalk and front door. EL

Scrambled eggs. Potato chips with homemade onion dip (Fage yogurt mixed with "Just Onions" until they soften). French fries with Heinz ketchup or malt vinegar.

I wish I could make all of the Sun staffers a wonderful meal, and give you all a hug. Thank you for your service to the community. As your neighbors, readers, and friends, we really appreciate all you have done. Small consolation, I know. :-(

I just heard about the latest round of lay-offs. I can't believe that they let so many long-term people go. And, John McIntyre, I'm outraged.

Please, EL, let us know where he lands if you can.

I just heard about another weird food in a can item - whole chicken in a can.

Looks like the cheeseburger in a can might be more edible.

Layoffs are weird in that the pattern of who gets the axe when is not what one might think. Of course, with the Sun having Guild members, that might be different.

Layoffs are why I'm PCB Rob and not Parkville Rob.

Anyway, comfort food for me is spaghetti, or maybe chili.

Last night I threw together some whole wheat pasta, oven-roasted cherry tomatoes, a bit of andouille and some caponata. My husband kept making yum yum noises that had nothing to do with Lady Marmalade or Lady Yummington. (Rosebud must be wondering where those two came from!)

I wonder what Lord Marmalade's comfort foods are. Something boiled, no doubt.

Splendid query Bonbon Girl. Whilst I have never cooked anything myself, when I am feeling a bit bilious I do enjoy some digestive biscuits and a sherry in the solarium. I must admit that since residing in the colonies I secretly enjoy some of your mashed potatoes with ketchup. Delicious with mashed carrots and a porter.

Will I get booted from the blog if I admit my comfort food is Ramen noodles and grilled cheese?

I was lambasted the other day for still eating Ramen at 25... by a 22 year old. :( I just like it!

This has absolutely nothing to do with comfort food ( gack, I hope not anyway) but the blog's crack search feature could not find the postings for space food sticks. It seems that Amazon has a special on astronaut ice cream and space food sticks.
Now I know that everyone is going to rush out to purchase these items. I hope that there is plenty in stock :-)

I'm 44, and I still eat ramen. I usually get the good Korean stuff, but every so often, I have to pick up a box of the traditional USian college variety at Aldi's.

Well, I not only still eat ramen but I'm considering writing a ramen cookbook because I've invented so many things to do with it. Ramen is not only comforting, it's versatile and cheap!

It 's good raw, it's good in stir frys, it's good with spaghetti sauce, it's good with cheese, and it's good with salads. It also makes a great chow mein noodle. Ramen is magic.

I had a friend who made salad out of Ramen noodles. I think she just cooked the kind with peas in it and then chilled then. (Speaking of too much salt!) She was pretty high maintenance, so we not only had to eat the stuff but we had to compliment it.

It also makes a good "hookup"

Cosmos Girl, the last shill spam for a paper-writing service was from Ukraine, so the bad English writers are in many different countries. we can only hope that Tribune doesn't hire any of them to be the next restaurant critic.
