Monday Morning Quarterbacking: Catches
Yesterday I reviewed Catches Restaurant, Grill and Wine Bar in Middle River. I try not to be too Baltimore-centric, but the fact remains that although we had fun there, I probably won't go back. There are too many other restaurants like it closer to home.
Still, I defy you to name a better restaurant in that immediate area. ...
I learned about Catches after it had been open for awhile. I've said it before ad nauseum, but I'm going to say it again here: I appreciate it when people tell me about new restaurants that I might not hear about otherwise.
Restaurateurs themselves forget that the definition of news (when it's an opening) involves, well, being new. They are so concerned -- and sometimes rightly so -- about wanting to get the kinks out before they get any publicity they don't tell me about themselves until they've been open for months. I'm always delighted when their first customers alert me.
That didn't happen with Catches, so I couldn't write it up for my Table Talk news column. Too bad. The owners would probably rather have had something in the Wednesday column, which would have been purely descriptive, than a review.
If your experience at Catches was different from mine, this is the place to let us know about it. Or if there's anything else you want to talk about, please post below.

Haven't been there, but I like the looks of it from the picture. Couldn't help laughing a little when I read the review yesterday that it was all the way in Middle River. Made it sound like it was all the way on the other side of the state. Being from Carroll and now Baltimore counties, I guess my idea of what is far to travel is different than a city resident?
I think that's a good point. I only hope people keep in mind when they read my reviews that I am a city resident, in the same way they note my other likes and dislikes when they judge how they would feel about the restaurant I reviewed. EL

Given that you say much of the food was over salted and the seafood overcooked, I think you gave them a very positive review. Probably more than they deserve.

Hmmmm...
From the review: I liked the place enough to consider going back for crabs, even if it is a trek from Baltimore.
From the blog: I try not to be too Baltimore-centric, but the fact remains that although we had fun there, I probably won't go back. There are too many other restaurants like it closer to home.
Are those sandals you're wearing? Or are they... FLIP FLOPS!!!
yeah, that does sound pretty stupid, doesn't it? Blame it on the hour this morning. What I should have said was I can get steaks and seafood closer to home, but I might go there for crabs because the atmosphere and people are nice. EL

A trek? Sir Edmund Hillary went on a trek. By Google Maps from the Sun's offices to Towson, via 83 is 12.5 miles and 18 minutes. To Catches 10.5 and 24. Come on EL I don't live in the boonies. What are the demographics of the Sun's paying readership. Maybe you should head out further.
FYI this is definitely the second dining establishment at that site. It seemed like it took an eternity to build.
Believe me, from where I live it didn't take any 24 minutes. I don't know what the demographics of my readership is; all I can judge from is who responds on the blog or e-mails me. And trying to get anyone to suggest any Top 10 restaurant or to e-mail, call or write me about new places outside the city is almost impossible. For instance, did you think of letting me know about it when Catches opened? EL

Wow-you are working too late. I enjoy casual dining, but I saw this site take literally three or more years to build. That to me spells trouble and this is already a redo from something else. It draws a crowd at the hour that screams BAR. I don't do the bar scene or a restaurant that needs that as the primary draw. I would not have suggested to you for that reason-though you do get around -because it's the kind of place I do not want to see reviewed. But that is me.
I am not sure what the epicenter of B-more is, but be fair when you call it a trek. Heck when I moved to Middle River from north Jersey I use to drive to the Gucci Giant in Pikesville to shop. That's a trek.
To anyone who does venture out this way-don't come on a Friday night because Pulaski Highway is mobbed. On your way, to or from, you can stop at Chaps for a good pit beef sandwich and catch a show at the Gentlemen's club.
All I said was that it was a trek for me. And it was, especially at dinner hour when the traffic was heavy. I'm not working late. Since I started this blog, my work day starts when I get up in the morning and ends when I go to bed. EL

Is a "nauseum" an institution that commemorates really horrible dinners?

EL, if you started reviewing restaurants based on the demographics of your readers, you would be reviewing places in Colorado and Florida.
