Adventures in shopping with your restaurant critic

SevilleOrangesYesterday I saw Seville oranges for sale at Whole Foods. I didn't have my camera with me, so I whipped out my handy-dandy cell phone. That's my excuse for the photo.

Faithful readers will remember that my father used to make Seville orange marmalade, and after he died I tried to continue the tradition, although it got more and more difficult. When my source for Seville oranges dried up (actually wild oranges that my Florida cousin sent to me), I scoured the Internet looking for them. I finally located some, but it wasn't easy. I haven't made marmalade in years, partly because it was just so darn hard to get the right oranges.

Now here Seville oranges are at my local supermarket, and the idea of my having the time -- or the inclination -- to make marmalade these days is so ridiculous I'm sitting at my desk laughing to myself.

Orange you glad you at least have the option?

This has got to be some kind of parable of modern life. We can get the ingredients but not the time.

Excellent point. EL

Why don't you publish your marmalade recipe?

It will make you want to shoot yourself. You strain the liquid so it's as clear as stained glass, and then add the blanched peel cut in the thinnest strips imaginable. It's just a ton of work. EL

My adventure in shopping was going to Harris-Teeter in Columbia. HOLY COW! It's even more expensive than Eddies! But they did have wine gums from the UK (for $6.00!). I managed to spend $72,00 without batting an eye.

I would likely have the time, but I couldn't eat it. Several decades ago I got some large tins of the fruit and juice, to which you added your own sugar and cooked it to make Seville Orange Marmalade. I believe the brand was MaMade or something like that.

I made marmalade o-n-e time. It was more than enough.

Fortunately, I can save myself the trouble, since I don't even like marmalade.

Pigtown, your adventure at Harris-Teeter is like almost every trip I make to Trader Joe's. I CAN'T STOP putting stuff in my cart, and before I know it, I've spent nearly a hundred bucks!

Mmmm--this is like not-so-subliminal advertising. I have a sudden urge to go to Trader Joe's. Last week they had some great cymbidium orchids for $24.99. One woman had filled her cart with them! I restrained myself and only bought one.

If there are any other old farts reading, Harris Teeter gives a 5% Senior Discount on Thursdays. You have to ask for it. I guess they're too polite to say "You look like you're old enough."
