A difficult restaurant review
![]()
Poor Richard. For every Grace Garden, there's a Dangerously Delicious Savory Pie House and all the problems entailed in critiquing it.
You'll see what I mean when you read his review today, which appeared in the Weekend section.

Difficult to write, no doubt, but from my experiences there it was pretty accurate. I agree with everything he has to say, from the random closings to the lack of beverages. Servers have always been super nice but service can be slow, which is odd given that they're just getting you a piece of pie. Anyway, I know there are at least a few of us in Hampden who are pulling for them, so hopefully they'll figure it out.

I went there shortly after they opened, walked into an empty place and had trouble finding a human being, then walked out after paying $7.50 for a scrawny piece of cold tomato and cheese pie in a cardboard box. I have not been back.

I also visited the Hampden eatery, but chose not to wait when no one appeared after a few minutes. I love meat pies, pasties, empanadas, etc., but just can't force myself to pay that much. At HampdenFest in September, a whole cherry pie cost something like 28 bucks. That's outrageous!

I went there and had the exact same experience: no one around, finally able to order a slice of pie. It was delivered to my table without any utensils. Had to go in the back to find anyone. Got plastic utensils, but could not get a napkin or glass of water. Could not find someone to pay. No price indicated anywhere for a slide of pie (only the types of pies were on the blackboard.) Finally left $5 on the table and haven't been back. Very nice people, but totally disorganized.
Now I buy slices of their pies at Carma's in Charles Village, which actually has real live customer service!

I wandered in there with a friend shortly before Christmas, and it seemed to be abandoned. There was no one to be found inside. Just a glass case up front with a few sad, half-eaten pies languishing inside. We wandered through the place looking for a human being, but there was no one, and it was rather uncomfortable, like stumbling into someone's living room when they've left the door unlocked. We called out, got no response, and left. I know I'll never go back.

Sounds like my experience at their Federal Hill location. On a Saturday night, 4 of us strolled in, waited forever to get the person working there to help us, paid like $6-8 for each slice (and there wasn't much selection -- maybe 2 or 3 choices). Then kept breaking the plastic forks trying to eat the very cold pies. I liked what I tasted, but won't ever feel the urge to go back.

It's a real shame about all the negative comments about the pie place. To me, it seems a great idea poorly managed. If you're going to charge me $8 for a flipping slice of pie that had better be the best slice I've ever had. Having to beg for a slice does not make me want another slice... and isn't that really the goal here?

This has been a total shock to me. I've had pie from there that someone got for me and it was great. My friend eats there frequently and says nothing but nice things about it - but he calls ahead and picks up and takes with. There you have it, the difference between carry out and eat in.

Such a shame...it really seems like the Hampden location is not working out.
I fondly recall when they were over on Fleet St. in Canton. That location was always full of friendly folks, and good service to go with the tasty pies.

The pies sound delicious, I hope they get things ironed out.

Those pies are delicious. I loved the Canton/Highlandtown store. Rumor had it that Rod employed his out-of-work musician friends, which explained the collection of interesting characters. Rod is a smart man. I suspect he'll take these remarks about service at his Hampden shop (and they're all true. I pretend it's amusing, tracking down an employee, but I'm faking it) and remedy the situation. As for price, well, Adam Smith's Invisible Hand and all of that.

I had a terrible experience with Dangerously Delicious Pies (should be renamed Dangerously Expensive Pies) on Friday night. I had a gift certificate from Restaurant.com that I bought quite some time ago, and they refused to honor it. They just said they weren't dealing with Restaurant.com and that I was out of luck. I emailed the owner, Rodney Henry, and got a very rude reply saying the same thing. In this economy I don't see how you can treat new customers so poorly. I will never go back.
