Spam sushi: a good thing?
The discussion about Spam musubi reminded me of an oddity I came upon awhile back: Spam sushi. Now I know you can find anything on the 'net, but somehow I didn't expect a recipe for Spam sushi to be on Epicurious.com.
There are just so many strange things about this recipe. First of all, why is it from an elementary school PTA under Our Favorite Recipes? I'm willing to concede that for some reason someone might want to make Spam sushi. I'm not willing to concede that it's anyone's favorite recipe. ...
I'm trying to keep an open mind here, but I have to admit that this comment under the recipe struck a chord with me:
I would rate this negative forks if I could. Health wise spam is one of the worst foods on the planet. The sodium, chemicals, preservatives, artificial colors...oh my god! But more importantly to waste good quality ingredients on spam sushi rolls? This should never have found it's way on a website that claims it is gourmet! Atrocious!

If you're going to serve Spam, is my feeling, just serve Spam.

"Health[-]wise" ... that just annoys me.
I don't like Spam quite simply. The statement that it is one of the worst foods on the planet is just wrong. Didn't VDP point out recently that it is a very simple food with none of those bad things. Pork is not evil, even if VoodooPork is occasionally. I think 10 per cent of my brain is filled with ingredient lists. Does anybody else have a mania for reading all the ingredients in any food?
Let's go to peapod and see:
INGREDIENTS: Pork With Ham, Salt, Water, Sugar, Sodium Nitrate.
Pork with ham, whatever that means. It's still icky to me, but not artificial at all. One natural preservative. Big deal. I still wouldn't want Spam sushi. I like hotdogs and I wouldn't want hotdog sushi. To each his own.

hubby has a friend in Hawaii. They love the stuff out there. I have no reason why. I know that when we sent her some real meat, hamburgers or petite filets she emailed him back astonished that they were indeed circular "like in the advertisements" I kid you not.

that stuff is AWESOME.
thank you owl meat for defending it even if you don't like it.
the saltiness just works real well with the rice,
besides spam musabi, spam in kimchi jigae (ask any korea) is oh so delicious.

Given the previous contention that SPAM won World War II, I wonder if there was German SPAM? Kind of esoteric.
Here's a great quote:
The 20th-century Chinese writer Lin Yutang once defined patriotism as the memory of what we ate as children.
I think that explains SPAM, SPAM sushi, Kraft macaroni and cheez in the box with the orange powder and fried bologna sandwiches.

owl meat garageband,
Yes, I share your mania. I do read all of the ingredients of every food I buy, and often compare the nutritional facts to at least try to buy something that could be good for me.
But I balance that with how much I like a food, and make the choice.
Once, awhile back, I went back and forth between the Jenny-O lean frozen turkey burgers and a package of lean ground turkey, trying to decide which was better. I chose the frozen ones, bad idea. They taste okay, but I much prefer the ground turkey.

Wouldn't the German version of SPAM be Vienna Sausages?

Fl Rob - you know about garageband? Try Radio Row.

Joyce,
There is an Atlanta brewing company called Sweetwater that makes an OUTSTANDING line of beers, their best (pale ale) being the 420. I first had it during one of my looooong delays at Atlanta's airport, and luckily they sell it down here.
Their website features a garage band called Outformation and the two tunes they play on there are quite catchy.
bonus: click on the "schwag" link at the bottom of the home page to see some really funny stuff, especially Hillary.

Excellent article...now we know why "SPiced hAM" doesn't have spice and why its primary ingredient is "Pork, with ham."
I'm going to sound really smart next time we go to the islands.

Fl Rob - cool website! One of the best I've seen in a while, actually. Garageband.com features unsigned artists as does Radio Row (where my partner's band is now number one, but I won't totally schill and say what band or what category!).
If you ever get a chance check out graphjam.com (anyone who wants a laugh). Some of those graphs are too funny!
