A look at Della Rose's
I came upon this photo while I was looking for something else, and I thought it was so beautiful I jumped at the chance to post it. I mean, crab dip doesn't usually look like a religious experience. Kudos to Sun sometime food photographer extraordinaire Algerina Perna.
It's Della Rose's crab dip, a restaurant that's been discussed under today's Top 10.
It turns out there are two Della Rose's locations. Karen Nitkin reviewed the one in Canton last year (the other is in White Marsh), and rereading her review, I can see why when I searched the archives for "sour beef" and "sauerbraten" I didn't come up with Della Rose's. It sounds like a mostly Italian restaurant. Sorry I can't link to the review, but it's no longer on the Sun's Web site.

What a GORgeous platter! A friend and I are doing lunch tomorrow--maybe we'll go to Della Rose's and I'll try the sour beef. Yum! I'll report back if we do.

It's one of my favorites in White Marsh. Consistent food. I love the pizza. Very good apps too. (Of course, I love any place that serves pizza and will order it every where I go no matter what.)

I've eaten in the Della Rose in White Marsh several times and there is very little Italian on their menu. I remember that at least once I had tuna melt, which was good. Overall, I'd eat there again if I were at The Avenue at mealtime.

Della Rose's was originally located on Belair Road, just north of Northern Parkway, just across the city/county line. They always had great, simple food.
Frankly I miss those days. I liked it when it was there much, much better. it was a 'real" authentic neighborhood tavern. It was a great place to go (for my crowd at least) after O's games back during the Memorial Stadium days (although it wasn;t really that close to 33rd St.)
But in no way do I begrudge the family from moving to more lucrative diggs. It made sense for them business-wise to do so (same goes for Bo Brooks).
But the "new" incarnation of DR's just isn't the same as that old neighborhood tavern. I
I kind of equate it to comparing the "old" Alonzo's to the "new" Alonzo's (except they stayed in the same location. but the place is totally different). To me, there's no comparrison. I'd much rather have the old Alonzo's back (another former great post O's game establishment), and I'd take the "old" DR's over the new one any day of the week.

Donny B,
I know where you mean. Parking wasn't all that plentiful around there. But it was a neat place nonetheless.
But, just down the street, going towards the city on the other side of the street, is Buck Fowler's Tavern. A favorite of John Unitas and other old Colts, back in the day. I was too young then, but I was in there a few years ago and they had lots of old Colts and Orioles memorabilia displayed, many with autographs.

Welp, didn't get to The Avenue today, so no Della Rose's. But, as The Terminator said, "I'll be back," and when I do, I'll try the sour beef.
