A Columbia restaurant closes
Sharon was looking for dim sum, but while she was at it she told me some news I hadn't heard before:
Jesse Wong’s Hong Kong in Columbia apparently closed at the beginning of December (said the man at the Asean Bistro who just answered the phone). I had been calling and the phones were disconnected at the lake front place.
I am without a clue as to other dim sum possibilities in the Baltimore area. Have you done a “Top 10” on this subject?
I called and, yes, the phone at Jesse Wong's Hong Kong is disconnected. ...
I then called Jesse Wong's Asean Bistro in Columbia, another restaurant in the local group, and the manager confirmed to me, too, that Hong Kong had closed Dec. 1.
Meanwhile I sent Sharon to last year's dim sum entry, but if you have any other suggestions for her, please post below.

Asian Court in Ellicott City does Dim Sum at lunch and from the carts on the weekends.

That's a shame. Would recommend Asian Court on Balt national pike in Ellicott City as a replacement. It's very good. If only Baltimore city could support dim sum. Anyone want to try? Please?

I was there the Sunday before Thanksgiving. It was full. Arrived around 11.30 and had a wait for a table. An hour later all the tables seemed full but there was no one on line. The dim sum were good: B some B+.
That was then, this is now. The Asian Court is the only other Baltimore area place offering dim sum I know about. I had dim sum there and I rate them a little lower than Hong Kong. Its sad that a metropolitan area in the size of Baltimore can't support a couple of dim sum places. (And wasn't dim sum on the trend list you posted a couple of days ago?)

Ouch, that one hurts! It was always hopping whenever I was there. Maybe we needed to go every weekend to keep them profitable...

Many years ago my late grandfather took me to a Dim Sum place down in Wheaton. Could not tell you what the name was but it was excellent.

This was the most over-rated, disappointing, and unimpressive trap of a restaurant I've ever been to. How this place got so much hype is beyond me.I ony heard great things about and was completely underwhelmed. (I know never to trust the restuarant advice of the ones who suggsted the place).
I'm, glad it's closing. The place is a total rip-off. The amount of money they charge for the food you get is highway robbery. There was absolutely zero value for the money you spend in that place.

Man that space on the Lakefront seems to be cursed for some reason. Every restaurant that goes in there seems to fail while the other 3 on the Lakefront (Sushi Sono, Clyde's and Tomato Palace) chug right along. At least Jesse had a longer run there then some of the others in that space.
Maybe someone needs to check the crawlspaces there for a voodo doll of a chef with pins stuck in it.
Excellent point. Any idea why (other than the voodoo doll theory)? EL

There are some locations that seem cursed. How long before something new happens at Charles & Madison where Donnas/Ruby Lounge/Saffron1/Saffron2/Indigma is now?

I felt the same way when we ate at the Hunt Valley location about 2 years ago. Hubby and I were on about our 4th or 5th date so I had to be polite and pretend to like it. I only recently told him what I really thought of the place. Turns out he felt the same way.

Okay, this is a two-for: I just had lunch (spelled lots of dim sum and plenty taken for home, later) at Asian Court and noticed that they will be open (all day) on Christmas and will serve dim sum by cart from 11 to 3.

I know this is a late comment, but I have to balance the couple of hard dings that Jesse Wong's is taking here. On the contrary, my wife and I thought their food was very good. I even got a similar evaluation from a coworker whose parents run a Chinese restaurant.
Sad to see Jesse Wong's close. I hope some other interesting restaurant goes in there, but it might take a while in this economy.
It's good to comment on an earlier post if you feel like it because at least for awhile it will show up under Most Recent Comments, and people will read what you have to say. Thanks. EL

Just had lunch at Asian Court when they offer dim sum from carts for the week-end. During the week its off a menu and dishes are brought as the are ready.
Don't know if its a new chef in the kitchen or what, but its a clear B+. So, if we are going to only have one dim sum place in the Baltimore area, at least its good. Got there about 11.30 and it was about 80%. When we left an hour later they were almost all tables were occupied.

That day I was actually looking for propane space heaters on poles such as you see on restaurant patios when its chilly but they still want to let people sit outside.
