Two more openings for you and a closing

TrapezeCloses.jpg

First the closing. I should say the alleged closing, although the Web site is gone and when I phone I simply get the message, "This mailbox is full."

L Good reported in a comment that Trapeze in Maple Lawn closed this last weekend. I also got an e-mail from MM yesterday telling me the same thing.

As usual, if this is temporary, or if you know anything different, please post below. ...

As for the openings, Midnight Sun Sam tells me Red Fish in Canton is open yet again, but he seems to be suffering from Red Fish Reopening Fatigue and wants me to report the story so he can link to Dining@Large. I'll get right on it, Sam. You bet.

Finally, Catches Restaurant, Grill & Wine Bar has opened on Pulaski Highway. The wine bar part is a little puzzling, but the steaks look good on the Web site.

I drove past Catches the other day and was curious to know more. So I checked its website which makes an unfortunate mistake in these harsh economic times. There's a complete menu posted -- without prices. There's no way to know if those great looking steaks (or any other items) offer decent value. Not a smart idea when a newly opened restaurant is trying to lure people in and build a customer base.

"Catches Steamed Muscles"
Don't know if I want to try them.

"Catches Steamed Muscles"

Yes, that does sound a bit strong. :-)

That's not the only misspelling on that website. They could use a copy editor.

Trapeze had the same exact menu as Bluestone (its sister restaurant in Timonium). The food at Bluestone is phenomenal so my guess is the location just wasn’t right for Trapeze.

I am familiar with another restaurant that the owner used to run. It was really great food at pretty reasonable prices. Nobody can beat his Clams Casino! I haven't been to Catches yet, but I am planning a trip soon.

Heh, yes, I am sick and tired of Red Fish opening and closing. Talk about a cursed location. Or maybe it's just poor management.

Elizabeth, as I mentioned in my email, the manager at Blue Stone said that Trapeze was closed for good. They have the same owner I believe (at least they advertise as being sister restaurants).

Copra on Charles St. downtown has been closed for weeks now. Does anyone know the story?

The picture appears to be Chilean Sea Bass, which while delicous is endangered. Please urge your local restaurants to use plentiful fish before another species is overfished to extinction. There are actually websites dedicated to informing restauranteurs of the fish endangerment and giving them substitutions from a "green" list.
getting off pedestal now!

I work across the street from Trapeze and it's been closed up for a week or more.

Just saw that Amanda's in Pikesville has closed. This leaves a gaping hole in Baltimore's kosher options as this was the last kosher "fine dining" restaurant in town. It's a shame, but all too predictable. Those who are exclusively kosher can't afford to go to a place like that very often, and those who aren't exclusively kosher are not interested in a kosher restaurant. Sigh.

Sorry to hear about Amanda's. I've never gotten the chance to eat there but I did eat at the prior restaurant, The Brasserie, and found it wonderful.

In North Miami Beach's Surfside community there are a few really top of the line kosher restaurants supported by Jews and non Jews alike. It's very expensive to live in Surfside so maybe the standard of living is higher than Baltimore's kosher community as a whole.
