Great places for sour beef and dumplings
I got this e-mail from Jesse, and I wonder why I haven't thought of it before. Hey, if we could come up with 10 I'd make sour beef my Top 10 since I haven't gotten many festive restaurants or, more importantly, and ideas about what festive in the context of restaurants really means.
I enjoy your top ten list and don't expect that for this one, but where can one go for really good sour beef? Some good potato dumplings and ginger snap gravy would be a nice bonus.
Was spoiled by my deceased partner and am at a loss for ideas.
Thanks in advance

I'm not really big on sour beef, but you can get it at Josef's in Fallston, Kibby's in the Catonsville area and any of the Silver Spring Mining Companies. Oh, you can also get on special days at the Zion Church downtown.

Second The Silver Spring Mining Company. I have friends who go there all the time just for the sauerbratin (hope I spelled that right - too lazy to check it!) :)

I'm going to butcher the spelling, but Eikenkrantz in Highlandtown has excellent sour beef and dumplings at a very reasonable price. I apologize, but I can't remember the street address.

Hill's Deli on Taylor Avenue in Hillendale used to have the best in town for carry-out. Every Thursday night, my mom would stop at Hills's, and that's what we'd have for dinner.

Bill - My father used to love Hill's sour beef & dumplings. He had serious neck and spine surgery a few years back, and as soon as he was well enough to eat substantial food, I stopped and pick some up for him for his first meal. However, it is now Valentines Cafe. Not sure if they still offer it.

My family has always enjoyed the Sour Beef and Dumplings at Kibby's, opposite St. Agnes Hospital on Wilkens Avenue. Their Greek Beef soup remains one of my favorite winter warmers!

The "German" Church in LoPo (Locust Point) has sour beef dinners during the fall.

While not a big fan of sour beef myself, my Mom and grandmom would make sour beef (sauerbraten) that guests to the table (and liked that) would rave about it.
I just liked that, when I was a teenager, I could have a beer with it.
Because Kool-Aid just didn't work with sauerbraten.

My Dad loves Sour Beef. He reports that the sour beef at The Sunset in Glen Burnie is the best that is left in this area. That's not a "dig" at The Sunset. It is very very good. It's a sad statement that this dish was once treated with pride and now is either gone from the menus or done half heartly.

In addition to where great sourbeef can be found, I wonder whether or not the dumplings has toasted and buttered bread cubes in the center.
Both my mother's and my father's sides of my family made them that way, but I haven't seen them done that way in years.

Silver Spring Mining Company has great sauerbraten. A friend of mine says it's just as good as her aunt's homemade version.

Two restaurants that serve good Sour Beef and Dumplings are Silver Spring in Bel Air and Patrick's in Timonium. The worst excuse for Sour Beef I've ever had was in Josef's of Fallston.
