The purple orchid garnish
![]()
I ate at a cutting-edge little spot recently, and I was surprised to see the purple orchid garnish on several of the dishes. (No, the dish pictured isn't from the restaurant. That was all I could find in our archives to show you what I meant.)
This particular garnish just seems very yesterday to me. It also seems wasteful unless it's reused, which I hope it isn't. ...
The orchids are edible, but does anyone really eat them? (I also don't like having the sprig of rosemary on everything, even when rosemary isn't flavoring the dish.)
I know I'm not logical about garnishes. I'm not sure what are cutting-edge garnishes, but I love a pretty plate. For instance, a few pomegranate seeds scattered on the plate look very good to me, and lemon always works. But orchids? Not so much.
Feel free to tell us why they work for you, if they do. Obviously some very good chefs are using them.

I usually feel the same way. When we go to Jesse Wong's Asean Bistro, and they add the flowers and fruit decorations to the plate, I always think to myself "how much did that add to the price of this dish?"

Anyone with kids knows that anything offensive on their plates ends up on YOUR plate. I'm laughing because we went someplace that garnished with some type of edible flower. I took my son and his friend and had on my bread plate both of their flowers. The server came by, and seeing this told me if I wanted him to he could bring me some extra flowers. I just told him "oh no, this is plenty thank you", and for a few minutes I contemplated just eating the stupid things but couldn't bring myself to do it.

Garnishes should be part of the dish, and edbile to the point they dont interfere with the dish(Orchids are edible, but they usually dont go with the dish)
When I see a sprig of rosemary sticking out of a filet, I want to leave the restaurant ASAP, I can't stand it, it makes no sense, and it just looks silly, that goes for any full stemmed herb, thyme, mint, etc. So lame.
As for the Orchids, they are a waste, don't taste good, dont look good. Why do they use them exactly?
Oh you know what other garnishes I hate, whien they sprinkle old bay or paprika or something on the rim of the plate. It makes the plate look so dirty and out of order. Rims should be clean, and without fingerprints. Keep the food on the center of the plate.

I'm sure that the waitress who brought this had a handkerchief with lavender lace edges in the pocket of her uniform.

That plate just generally pisses me off. What an aesthetic pile of vomit. It looks like the Queer Eye guys were smoking crack and went berserk. The only thing I can think of doing with that fork is jabbing it in the chef's eye, which is not so bad a crime since he is clearly blind already. Ha ta! It makes it look like that poor naked skate is going to the junior prom with an oversized corsage.
And this one goes out to Sandy Skate and her date SpongeBob ChefPants
As time goes on I realize
Just what you mean to me
And now, now that you're near
Promise your love
That I've waited to share
And dreams of our moments together
Color my world with hope of loving you

Years ago while vacationing in North Carolina we ate dinner at a very nice restaurant. When my meal of sauteed trout came out, a big crawfish was the garnish. It creeped me out, I couldn't eat with it staring up at me, so we covered it up in the bread basket. Got a weird look from the waitress when she cleared the table, but I can't eat with a mud bug on my plate!

I love a tiny chop of mixed veggies that looks like a multi-coloured confetti.

I'm with you on that plate, Rev. Ed. It is a dog's breakfast, and not a pampered Pomeranian, either. More like a colour blind, dyslexic pit bull with an inferiority complex.
Orchids are edible? Cool. I'll have to eat mine next time I get one. Only had one show up on my plate once. I took it home to my partner.
Garnish should be edible, compliment the other stuff on the plate both esthetically and taste-wise, and shouldn't be moving.

One of the regular vendors at the Bel Air Saturday market brings little clamshell boxes of microgreens in the spring, and throws in a few fingersful of little flowers. They are much tastier when they are small, and easier to eat. Do you slice up an orchid petal before eating it?

My niece always tucks an orchid garnish behind her ear or in her hair.

...Nobody like flowers any more? Really? What's wrong with an orchid on a plate? :) You don't have to eat it )) it's art. When i go out for dinner to a nice restaurant, i expect flowers on my plate or table...or anything else to make me enjoy the atmosphere, not just eat a plain meal and leave..if you don't like anything pretty, you might as well just go to Mcdonald's drive-through...and i don't think you have to be a queer man to appreciate a flower...flowers are beautiful! :)

When I visited Philippines they also used orchids for a cuisine. They even eat some of it. I also try the Orchids Ice Cream. Since some of them can be eat then everyone should know how to take care of them. I just found a site that teaches of how to take care of orchids free of charge.
