Comments, cats and a cover of Hallelujah

My thanks go out to the Buckmeister, who has done some fantastic research for us. Let me point out that he had to scroll through 1,378 entries to do it. I'm going to cut and paste his comment in its entirety because otherwise it will get buried under a hundred other comments:...

"OK, just for the record, the following posts have result in over 100 comments:

7/10/08 - Sandwich Musings (150 comments)

5/28/08 - Beef Fat Again Already (142)

6/3/08 - Top Ten Crab Houses (137)

2/5/08 - Top Ten Locations We Miss Terribly (131)

6/5/08 - Crabtastic Fun From You Know Who (106)

7/26/08 The Split Check and Other Horrors (100, with this one)

(Although, Splitting the Check, Part Deux on 7/27/08 had 54 comments and I, for one, kept getting confused about which of the two posts I was commenting on.)

Two Posts have garnered over 90 comments:

6/2/08 - Where Else To Get A Great Crab Cake (99...missed the top list by just this much...)

1/15/08 - Top Ten Burgers (92)

Yes, I scrolled back through all the archives. Did you know that when you scroll quickly down page after page, eventually your eyes, in a vain attempt to keep up, roll back into your head?

They do.

And when ever this happened, my cat, who usually sits on my desk while I'm on the computer, would start hissing as my eyes started rolling back and when the only thing showing was the bottom white part of my eye ball, he would leap off the desk and go hide behind the bookcase.

This, my friends, is what passes for a fun Friday night in the big rectangular states.

By the way, EL, as I was scrolling and scrolling, I would read a little and it turns out that on 4/4/2008, you and Gailor listened to Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah" on your cross-country trip.

This performance of that song is my favorite.

That is pretty amazing. And sad, but in a nice way.

The video you linked to is "no longer available," so I'm not sure what version it is, but MY favorite performance of The Hallelujah is by Rufus Wainwright. :)

OMG: and I thought that I lived a boring life. Bucky, you outdo even me!
What a trouper you are though.
And as a reward for your valued service, I hereby award you the title of
steward of the grand state of Colorado in the Queen's Kingdom of Sandbox.
(scroll down the list to 'steward' to see your duties, or you can read the other positions as well).

Don't forget to take the evil x out when you link. :-) EL

I was looking at my list this morning and decided that I should have also included the two posts that produced over 80 comments:

6/16/08 - What's Your Favorite Potato Chip? (86 comments)

4/16/08 - Dining@Large Gack Scale (87 comments)

The D@L Gack Scale comments made me shake my head over and over (sideways, not up and down.)

I started out, going backwards through the archives, noting posts with 50 or more comments. I quickly raised the bar to 60 or more comments, then raised it once again to 80 or more comments. There are a whole raft of posts in the 50-79 comment level.

Great Job Bucky!

I can't say I've heard that song before, but the performance you linked to is very good. Thanks.

Bucky is amazing. If he did not exist, the sandbox would have to invent him.

Rob in PCB FL--you're behind in your Shrek watching!

Thanks EL.
As soon as I hit Post I remembered that I hadn't removed it. I hit Cancel, but it was too late.
Thanks for taking care of it!

BTW, I just linked to the song, and it worked for me. A beautiful version, btw.

Well, it's about time to attempt to change the direction of this post.
Dan Rodrick is usurping your territory again, but
this is a neat topic.

And to think Bucky was so unsure as to whether he belonged here when he started posting.

Dahlink,
I've never seen Shrek. Is it any good, from an adult point of view or is it just for kids?

It's OK, Rob in PCB FL. I've never seen it either. I heard that song in an episode of Cold Case and wondered where it came from. Now I know. Another reason to be thankful for Bucky.

Rob in PCB FL, our whole family loves the Shrek series, but I think the first one is the best. See that one on DVD, then decide if you want to see the others. The movies are full of jokes and insider movie references that will go right over the head of the little ones, but they will enjoy it, too.

Rosebud, it was written by Leonard Cohen, who was enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year, in the mid-1980's. And it's been used in many television shows and movies. I first focused on it during the "West Wing" episode where CJ Craig's Secret Service boyfriend was killed during the convenience store robbery.

A lot of singers have covered it; one of my other favorites is the version done by Willie Nelson (being, as I am, from where I am.)

Well, I am surprised. Perhaps this is the first time where the Sandboxer's did not switch to a new topic when one presented itself.
And I thought the topic of "hometown treats that we could not do without" was a good one, even though it was on Dan Rodrick's blog.
Oh well...

Dang, Bucky!
I remember that episode of West Wing as I was a big fan of the show. But I don't recall the song.

I was, too, Rob. I wish they had figured a way to continue it.

The scene I was referring to is here. This is the Jeff Buckley version of the song.

Well heck, if we're discussing things we miss, I miss "The West Wing" something fierce! It was bright, erudite, and SO well written! Hey, I have an idea...let's try to promote Jed Bartlet for President! I remember the episode in question very well, and it had me in tears.

Forty five minutes after following the link I finally came back. What a reminder of how sublime can be television.

Wow, thanks for finding and posting the link Bucky!
I sure wish they could have found a way to keep it on also.

Thanks, Bucky! I really miss the West Wing. And one of the few television shows I bought on DVD so I'd always have it.

When Garrison Keeler was introducing Martin Sheen on Prairie Home Companion, he said something along the lines of Martin Sheen being the man who gave great solace to millions of people with his alternate universe presidency.

And I would have loved to have seen President Matt Santos.

So, have you ever gone to a seafood restaurant, thinking you would have, say, a nice brunch and suddenly a big fish appears out of nowhere and you realize that you are the seafood?

I hate it when this happens.

Still going through the archives Bucky? Your cat must be completely traumatized by now.

So what do you think of the Sandbox after going through the entire history? Do you have a favorite post? Any idea where Owlie is?

Rosebud...West Wing AND A Prairie Home Companion. Two of my favorites. Mrs. Bucky's and my usual wintertime Saturday night: build a fire in the fireplace, fix up some finger food and hot spiced cider and listen to A Prairie Home Companion.

See, I thought West Wing could have continued the show, with an entirely new cast in the Santos administration (ok, maybe a couple of hold-overs) and it still would have had legs. I was sorry they didn't try.

Hey Bucky,
Greetings to the Rectangular State from the Pistol-Shaped State (sorta)!

You are exactly right! Why not have a Santos administration? Keep a couple of the regulars, have some new folks in and have a go at it.

My brother raves over Prarie Home Companion, I'll have to listen in sometime.

Bourbon Girl - That was a post I ran across when I was scrolling the other night, and it just struck me as funny.

Of course, I'm about 5° off plumb.

My favorite post was on 6/13/07 and was titled "Chicken Head Etiquette". I just laughed and laughed and laughed. (Favorite so far...I have to admit that I was doing more scrolling than reading, but I caught some big things, like the diner-eating fish.)

Owl Man has disappeared, but I did notice that he has disappeared before, and eventually returned. As a matter of fact, a lot of regular commenters seem to have taken off the last couple weeks...maybe they went on a culinary fact-finding mission together.

I did run across a couple of posts that revived a question I've wondered about for most of my life: Is shopping at Piggly Wiggly more fun than shopping at other grocery stores, or is the name just very misleading?

It occured to me after I had already submitted my reply to Bourbon Girl that I should have linked Chicken Head Etiquette for everyone's ease.

(I just laughed again...this could have been an episode of Seinfeld.)

And can you imagine that it got only three responses, two of which were basically serious? I guess they were all just in "Sandbox training" back then.

Bucky - I have wondered the same thing about Harris Teeter.

And I wasn't around when the Chicken Head Etiquette post happened, but I too laughed out loud, several times, at two of the three posts. Imagine what the current Sandbox force could do with that one!

Perhaps this should be one that comes up for round two the next time EL vacations.

Bourbon Girl...maybe the two chains should merge and form Piggly Teeter. Ha Ha Ha. Sometimes I crack myself up.
