Baltimore's Top Chef

RedMapleChef.jpg

The rumor is that Jill Snyder, head chef of the Asian tapas lounge Red Maple in Mount Vernon, is a contestant on the next season of Bravo's Top Chef. It's appeared on so many blogs I guess I ought to link to one of them.

In a way, I hate to. I'm afraid she might get kicked off, if indeed the rumor is true, because of breach of contract or something. This is why I will never make a good investigative reporter.

I've never watched Top Chef. I love scripted TV too much, so I'm boycotting reality shows.

El, you run a blog and hate reality shows? A blog is the ultimate reality show.

It's all the reality I can take. EL

There is reality, and then there are reality shows. Alternate universes, really.

I don't have much patience for reality shows, garish trainwrecks that they are, but I do like Top Chef, mostly for the creative element - it's interesting to see what the talented chefs come up with when they are challenged.

The judging is thoughtful and deliberate, and there are guest judges who are famous chefs and I get to learn about what they do that makes them so good. Would love to have a hometown girl to root for.

I miss the Japanese Iron Chef.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is TOP CHEF. A nationally shown show with chefs from around the country. The fact that a Chef from Baltimore was picked, not DC, but Baltimore is INCREDIBLE. The fact that she works for an independent restaurant is even better.

Win or loose, it doesn't matter, just being selected to be on TOP CHEF, does Baltimrore proud.

Just my $.02.

I tend to HATE "reality" shows. My sister has tried for some time to convince me that Top Chef was actually worth watching, but I resisted. Finally, one night, in a fit of boredom, I did watch an episode & have been hooked ever since. Sure, there's the necessary amount of manufactured drama that every "reality" shows has, but the challenges are interesting, the judges well-informed (and Anthony Bourdain is a frequent guest judge, a huge plus in my book), and the creations and creativity expressed make up for it.
