The $50 grilled cheese sandwich

TuscanStyleGrilledCheese.jpg

Retired in Elkridge sent me this link to a story in USA Today yesterday (that sounds stupid, doesn't it?) about elite grilled cheese sandwiches, some of them going for as much as $50.

Wow. Let them eat cake.

He suggested a Top Ten on the best grilled cheeses around here, but I could only come up with two off the top of my head.

One was Cafe Hon's, which my daughter used to love with a chocolate milkshake when she was little.

The other one was at Alexander's Tavern, and it came with cream of tomato soup. Talk about comfort food.

If we can just think of eight more, my Top Ten for Tuesday will be done.

Yay grilled cheese (especially with Bacon)! Here are three more:

Peter's on Water St. serves a nice triple-decker on texas toast

Copra has a good one with Bacon

The Owl Bar also does grilled cheese well, with Bacon optional

Victoria Gastro Pub near Columbia has a Lobster Grilled Cheese sandwich on the Lunch menu which contains "Brie Fondue, Maine Lobster." Might have my DW try it next time we're there.

Mick O'Shea's has a delicious one.

LJ is giving Bacon Girl some competition!

Thanks for the heads up, Dahlink.

LJ - stop stealing all my suggestions or I will send Bourbon Girl after you, and (as Owlie said) she is a harsh mistress!

Bacon goes supremely with grilled cheese. Some places try to ruin it by addidng tomato - don't fall for it.

GO BACON!

There is a hole-in-the-wall whose name I don't think I ever did know, at the corner of Eastern Avenue & Haven Street that makes wonderful grilled cheese sandwiches.

Bacon Girl!

You are so right! Bacon is the perfect additive to a grilled cheese, not the inferior tomato slice!

cheese...bacon....mmmmmm!

I might just throw the orange roughy I just cooked into the trash and do a grilled cheese with bacon!

From the USA Today story: "I have 32 versions," says Matt Fish, who opened Melt in Lakewood, a Cleveland suburb, two years ago. "We take people's basic perceptions of the grilled cheese and blow it out of the water."

I'm trying to figure out, "Why?"

Why does Bacon Girl always get all the attention around here?

I just discovered that the hostess gift of chocolate chip biscotti I recently received goes supremely well with Maker's Mark. Does that count for anything??

And where is that Owl? He missed the 5-way at the KY truck stop.

I might just throw the orange roughy I just cooked into the trash and do a grilled cheese with bacon!
Don't throw it away!! Have the wonderful grilled cheese & bacon now and save the roughy to have cold on a salad for dinner. A great warm weather meal.

But give me grilled cheese & bacon and a bowl of cream of tomato and I'm at grandma's for Saturday lunch...sigh

I didn't toss the orange roughy, it was delicious. But I'm headed to the store later to get some bacon and have that grilled cheese with bacon tonight!

Come on, people! We only have 8 on the grilled cheese. We need two more suggestions to nudge out the bagel TTT.

Though if we count Saturday grandma's and PCB Rob's we have ten. If not, EL maybe you could call it the Hot Eight Tuesday? It has a certain bad grammar bad pun appeal, yes?

And how was it Rob? Give us the bacon-tastic details.

I got nothing here. If I want a good grilled cheese it's sliced sourdough with three cheeses (usually cheddar, provolone, and maybe gouda or whatever has caught my eye) and a cast iron skillet with salted butter done in my kitchen.

Try the Grilled cheese with Granny smith apples at Donna's Restaurant at the village of Cross Keys. and have it with bacon too.
It comes with tomato bisque soup!

Pete's Grill serves the best grilled cheese with bacon (and optional egg, minor detail). And their bacon is locally sourced and the best around. Plus our home grown olympian Michael Phelps eats there.

Was having lunch at Atwaters in Belvedere Square the other day and a little girl with her parents was having a grilled cheese sandwich the size of my head. About 5 thick slices of delicious looking cheese. Haven't actually tried it but the visual and Atwaters' success with other sandwiches at least make it worth mentioning.

Miss Shirley's offers two choices: the
Ham & Three Cheese Melt (Swiss, Parmesan (which is the yummy crust on the outside of the bread slices), Cheddar & Smoked Ham on Sourdough) OR Grilled Cheese (White Cheddar Cheese, Applewood-Smoked Bacon & Tomato on Sourdough).

I love the Copra grilled cheese too! Perfect comfort food. mmmmmmm.

Okay, if the Sandbox needs a #10, you can count my kitchen - but I refuse to share the recipe and I only charge $5 per delicious sandwich.

EL: Thanks for using a pic from my homeland with this blog post.

Welcome back, Piano Rob--or should that be Piano Roberto? You have been missed.

I some times get the grilled cheese at the American Legion. Is it a fancy artisanal sandwich? ummm No. But it is $2 and for an extra quarter you can get it with ham.

LJ,
Sorry for the delay but it was tasty! Two slices of mild cheddar perfectly melted, between which were three slices of hickory-smoked thick bacon, oven roasted. The bread was whole-wheat.

another is planned in the immediate future!
