Next Tuesday's Top Ten

gregsbagels.jpg

I like to introduce this subject before the end of the work week, which is when most of us do our Internet reading, because I always get some good ideas from you, either a topic that's better than the one I thought of, or good examples of whatever list I've settled on.

For next week I'm almost tempted to do Top Ten Locally Owned Bagel Shops because when I told Wing we had done bagels ad nauseam and then went back and checked with the search function, we actually hadn't done bagels ad nauseam. It just felt that way. The problem is that I don't think we can come up with 10. ...

To counteract last week's elitist list on cheese plates, perhaps we should do the Top Ten Greatest Fast Foods. Ha ha. Just kidding.

Or maybe because of the strong feelings stirred up by my post "What Recession?" maybe this is a good time to rework the "deals" list: Top Ten Deals at Nice Restaurants, but try to find ones that weren't mentioned last time we made up such a list. Of course, it being Restaurant Week and all, that might seem beside the point, but maybe it's worth doing anyway.

Or is there some better topic?

What about the top 10 bar tending blunders? I was at Copra last weekend (which was EMPTY on a Friday night, by the way) and ordered a vodka bay breeze, and was served a very watery vodka cranberry. My father, a scotch man, routinely orders scotch and soda with a twist, and is almost always served scotch and water, scotch and soda missing the twist, or sometimes, just scotch (I wouldn't complain, but hey).

I know it's not food, per se. But a restaurant with a bad bar (or bar tending staff) can get crossed off my list pretty quickly, especially given the number of Baltimore establishments that live and die by their bar receipts.

Have we done top ten (non-chain)places to get a decent salad? It is summer, after all.

I also liked someone's recent happy hour food idea.

I feel like we've done bagels ad nauseam too, whether we actually did or not. Yawn.

Restaurant Week is a great time to do other deals, I think. Or maybe the week after it ends, although Brasserie Tatin has extended their Restaurant Week menu until the 10th, because the response was so good.

I do like the idea of decent salads.

I'd still like to see the top 10 places downtown (say from the Inner Harbor to roughly the Walters) to get edible lunch.

How about widening bagels to breadish things? So, the list could include peasant bread, bagels, croissant, etc. Got to be 10 non-chain delectable bready delights in Baltimore.

Munching on an "Everything" from Bagel Works in Bel Air this morning for breakfast, I'm wondering what constitutes a chain. I can think of at least three of them, but they seem pretty local. Does that count?

MD Canon - Technically I guess it'd be a McBagel type place which I don't even know if any are still around (ie- Einsteins). However; I think the fact that the majority of the bagel dough which these places are baking and/or serving coming from The
Commissary (formerly part of The Bagle Bin) in Elkridge should be enough to mess up a top 10 because they're all the same dough! However; I'd go along with it because Millie and crew make a fine bagel and a great bialy.
