We are not amused

FourthSangria.jpg

Is this ugly or what? However, I'm going to give you the recipe that came with this photo because I love sangria. And what with the weather and all, maybe you need something to cheer yourself up. I know I do. I've just found out that the Wimbledon men's semifinals, which are going on right now, have been embargoed on ESPN2 so they can be shown not live on NBC later. Excellent move, NBC. I'm sure there are many exciting features and lots of important news on the Today Show today.

Note: even on a holiday it's not good to start drinking before 11 a.m.

I hadn't heard of the book the recipe is from, and I never thought of the concept of "pitcher drinks" before, although I like it. Let's see how many we can name.

Well, sangria, of course, and martinis. Mmmm. I think I'm stuck. I guess there are 99 others, though. ...

Red, White and Blue Sangria

Preparation time, start to finish: 15 minutes (plus at least 4 hours chilling). Makes about 7 servings.

1 bottle dry white wine
1/2 cup triple sec
1/4 cup citrus- or berry-flavored vodka
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup simple syrup
3/4 cup blueberries
3/4 cup hulled and sliced strawberries
3/4 cup raspberries
1/2 cup pineapple chunks

Combine all ingredients in a large glass punch bowl or pitcher and stir well. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours. Serve over ice.

Add a couple/three shots of Everclear and that sangria recipe would be near perfect. Although I prefer red wine sangrias, even in the summer.

Good recipe, and yes, hideous glassware! Other adaptable to pitcher drinks that come to mind are Fuzzy Navels, Bloody Marys, Melon Balls, Mojitos, and Mimosas if served before the champagne goes flat.
The "not live" sports thing sort of reminds me of the Olympics where they do that annoying stuff all the time so in the interim, you've already learned who won, what records were set, etc. Annoying!
Anyway, Happy 4th everyone. I think I'll do the all American thing and partake of some delicous cocktails today!

Does the Maker's bottle count as a pitcher?

.

Actually, on the Today Show this morning, some "eating right" guy was telling us which "adult drinks" are better for you. We had to guess between a mojito and a margarita.

The mojito won. He called the margartia "TOXIC" because the mix has high fructose corn syrup.

We went to a party recently where they had margaritas in a big cooler thingie--does that count? (They were lethal, too.)

No cable EL? That s*cks. Sorry.

I'm kind of glad Wimbledon is on later, when the family will be here visitng for BBQ. I'll put it on the background, it will fill the awkward silences, and distract us from wanting to punch each other after having too many pitcher drinks. Cheers!

I have cable. I have the plasma TV. I have HD. ESPN2 WASN'T ALLOWED TO SHOW THE MATCHES. EL

EL: But then you would have missed Nadal-Shieffer (sp?). This way you see both, as my tennis junkie wife is doing -- without cheating by checking the result online. That was real self-control!

Why would I miss Nadal? I would never miss Nadal. Both matches were on Centre Court, Nadal's beat down after Federer's. EL

Bourbon Girl,

Why not? Its Independence Day so if we want to call the Maker's bottle a pitcher, and pour from it early and often, so be it!

Cheers!

In honor of the holiday and recognition of summer, I'm setting aside the Irish Whiskey and Scotch to celebrate the holiday with a bit of Bourbon and Ginger.

I agree the embargo is stupid, but I don't blame NBC, I blame the powers that be who control tennis and ESPN. The people in control of Wimbledon should lay down the law to NBC: this is our sport's p[remier sporting event, and if you want to televise it, show it live or not at all. And ESPN should never, ever agree to an embargo of anything. It's purportedly a sports NEWS operation. If news happens, such as the results of a m,en's semifianls, it should announce it even if it can't televise it. If Obama or McCain picked a vice presidential running mate, do you think CNN wouldn't tell you because it was embargoed? Shame on ESPN.

Now that I'm all riled up, I'm going to calm down with a glass of sangria.

JH -- I hope you didn't waste any good bourbon with that ginger.

Dry white wine is stupid when you are adding simple syrup, which is supersaturated sugar water. Sangria should always start with a hearty, fruity, sweet wine. Ewwww, we don't like sweet wine. We're Americans, we like dry wine. Get over yourselves, you're going to be speaking Chinese in 20 years anyway.

JH - I agree with Skin. I hope you meant that you were drinking bourbon with a girl named Ginger.

Let's not be too hard on Wimbledon for the embargo. The TV tail wags the sports dog in most majors. Why do you think there are referee's timeouts in football? How else would they get in the requisite commercials? One of the factors that has recently got me addicted to soccer is the fact they play virtually nonstop.

Made Sangria this weekend, from a recipe I found on the internet (hadn't made it for a while). It came out pretty well, and I can post/link to the recipe if anyone's interested. There were two things, however, that were odd about the recipes I found (leaving aside for the moment the one that said to add bananas - ick!) - they all called for soda water or some other form of carbonation, which I've never seen (drank?) in sangria, and left out. The other thing was that they all said to "add sugar." (Except maybe the ones that called for Sprite - double ick.) Not one suggested using simple syrup, but of course that's what I used.

You have to be careful out there.

Agree with everyone

How bored is everyone that they are going back to posts from a year ago?

How bored is everyone that they are going back to posts from a year ago?

It was only one person (albeit an anonymous one), and it probably wasn't boredom as much as not noticing the dates.
