Next Tuesday's Top Ten

Unknown.JPGEvery Friday I get a nagging little e-mail from Editor Tim entitled "It's promo time." This reminds me I haven't come up with a Top Ten Tuesday topic yet. (I shouldn't complain. I like it whenever the blog gets promoted in the paper.)

Anyway, I'm not inspired this week so I'm open to suggestions, but someone wrote to me recently asking me for restaurants open Monday. There are a surprising number, she said, that aren't.

I might do Monday restaurants on Tuesday if the list is of interest to you. To narrow it down a bit, they would have to be a certain type: not a special occasion place but an after-work kind of restaurant.

What do you think? And don't just say too boring; come up with another suggestion. Owl Meat, you may only post under this entry before midnight. ...

Just as I finished writing the above, I got an e-mail from Laurie looking for a place to celebrate getting her masters (congratulations, Laurie). She was hoping we'd done a Top Ten Restaurants for Celebrations, but I don't think we have. How about that for a topic?

Top ten last meals before you are say executed or go on a trip to Mars. I guess you could pick specific meals at specific places.

There is a site that lists actual death row last meals. It's pretty grim and skews heavily toward pork chops.

I like that T10 topic. However, people celebrate different occasions in different ways. For example, when I got my MBA in 2005 I celebrated with a tasteful champagne-and-appetizers affair at the Inn at Government House. A pal of mine, to celebrate her law degree, rented the back room of a local tavern and had one rowdy party. I guess my point is - refined celebration or unbridled?

As an add-on, some Monday opening restaurants also have Monday specials and these would be good to include. You may also want to include carryouts with Monday specials. As an example, Que Rico sells an entire chicken on Monday at only $2 more than a half. And these are substantial birds.

These may not be the "sexiest" topics for a "Top Ten", but in today's economy.......very user friendly.

I want to see Top 10 uncommon ethnic eateries. So, not just Thai and Indian.

Bless you, it all depends. How formal does Laurie want to go, and with how many people? For a "mob" at a casual eatery, many restaurants have private rooms, or at least alcoves. If it's a small group of immediate family, she might want to go higher up the culinary "food chain," e.g., the family's favorite fancy restaurant. If she (or a friend/family member) lives in a roomy house/apartment, perhaps they'd be willing to host a catered buffet "open house" where people can drop in, have sip and a nosh, and stay for as long or as short a time as they wish. If she buys her own booze, the cost might be lower than going to a restaurant.

She's thinking along the lines of Kings Contrivance. EL

Hmmm... Top Ten Restaurants for Celebrations? That takes in a lot of territory. I've celebrated various things in restaurants ranging from from Tippy's Taco House (in Laurel, now renamed Toucan-somthing-or-other) to The King's Contrivance, for which a neighborhood was named in Columbia. That's quite a range.

How about TT bistros?

Top 10 restaurants with waterfront dining.

Between Baltimore, Eastern Baltimore County, Annapolis, and really both shores of the Chesapeake, there are many to choose from.

A few of my favs,

Nick's
Bay Cafe
Cantler's

But those are just a few. There are many, many others.

And I don't even care if you don;t credit me this time! :-) LOL.

I don't want to start another food fight in the Sandbox [you boy, in the back, stop snickering], but don't we have the same definitional problem with Bistros that arose with Diner? Its not that its not a worthy TT, but sandrules need to be set before we step into that patch of quicksand.

What I'm looking for is somewhere along the lines of King's Contrivance which is where I went with my family to celebrate my undergrad graduation. Elizabeth suggested Woodberry Kitchen, but they are booked. Thanks for the suggestions!

RtSO: Sorry, sir, but I wasn't snickering; I was merely clearing my throat.

At the same time, what distinguishes a restaurant from a trattoria, a cafe from a deli (or delly)?

Seems like a good time to produce the D@L Dictionary and Policies/Procedures Manual.

Laurie - for many a special occasion (e.g., law school graduation), I've never gone wrong with Tio Pepe, especially with out of town guests. Not only is the food great, the service is perfect, and if you tell them it's a special occasion, they take really care of you. They have private and semi-private rooms, or they can put you in a more secluded corner if you let them know.

I would love to see Top Ten Deals. Not just Monday night. I had a huge list (like fajita dinner for two and a pitcher of margaritas for $20 on Wednesdays at Nacho Mama's) when I lived in the city but now that I'm in suburbia I'm out of touch with the good deals.

LJ, please refer to the D@L archives--not everyone loves Tio Pepe!

Christine the Lioness, I'm with you on the Top Ten Deals--something we could all use (assuming we still go out to eat at all and can afford the gas to get there and back ...)

Ive had great celebrations at the Ambassador dining room, and I imagine that their new place the Spice Company would also be an ideal locale. The staff is very attentive, and the food is great (and pretty reasonable!)

If this isn't too late, I second the Spice Company. Great food, service, and atmosphere. They also seem to enjoy helping to make a celebration special.
