Shallow Thought Wednesday

I thought Multimedia Editor and Resident Cheeseburger and Wings Expert John Lindner had forgotten us this week, but I checked my work e-mail and look what I found: ...

It’s bothered me for a long time. Days. On and off. Perhaps publication in an otherwise reputable blog will scrub it from my brain radio playlist forever.


De gustibus non est disputandum.


There is no disputing about taste.


After ponderous sessions of shallow thought, mostly while driving, I have arrived at the following unique and satisfactory conclusion:


My dimpled clavicle!* That’s all we do about taste: Dispute.


I defy any and all to offer a single issue of taste that I cannot dispute, or, if  I am tired, cannot find someone to dispute in my place.

 

I mean, if you go for that kind of thing. Some people don’t.

 

*Note: the exclamation point in use in this vignette is perfectly valid!

Good taste is preferable to bad taste.

I see it more along the lines of "One man's meat is another man's poison."

You say you like something. I say its awful. Who's right? We both are - to ourselves!

There are many things most of us agree on, but not everything. For example, I do not like crabs. In fact, I figure if the Good Lord wanted me to eat fish he'd have made me a shark. But I do not dispute your enjoyment of seafood or want to make you think like me.

That's how there's no disputing about taste.

Or as we say in French, "one man's meat is another man's poisson.

Not only that, but recent scientific research shows that we don't all taste things the same way. Your set of taste buds is not the same as mine. Some people are more sensitive to bitter tastes than others, etc. Any "super tasters" among us?

After all the hot salsa and sauces I've had, its more like "Tastebuds - we don' need no steenkin' tastebuds."

Or, as the south seas missionary said to his son at the cannibal tribe's festival, "One man's meat is another man's poi, son."

And bad taste is preferable to no taste!
Now, do you say tomāto (to-may-toe)
or tomăto (to-mah-toe)? After all, that is the ultimate arbiter of a person's taste :-)

Rosebud - thanks for that link. I am a "normal taster." Can't wait to find out who else in the Sandbox is likewise on the 19th!

Hmmm, go figure...apparently I am a supertaster; however, I do enjoy strong foods such as grapefruit, Brussels sprouts, etc., that supertasters "usually" don't like. Whaddaya know...I'm "super" at something.

I question the veracity of that Supertaster test. For several of the questions none of the choices were really correct for me.

At any rate, the test thinks I'm a supertaster, and yet I like all of the things listed that supertasters generally don't like.

Dottie, I came out as a Supertaster, too and also love bitter things like Brussels sprouts and dark chocolate. Does that make us double Supertasters?

Where's our Shallow Thought Wednesday, April 10 Edition?

That's what I wanted to know, but I didn't want to badger John and I didn't see him around yesterday. Do you think we could publish it on Thursday and maybe nobody would notice if he gave us one today? EL

EL: As long as we don't lose Deep Thought Thursday as a trade-off - LOL! (I guess even D@L Sandboxers can get set in their ways.)

Its doubtful the membership will notice that Thursday is not Wednesday. Also, Mr. Linder may want greater distance from the sandbox. Look what's happened to Mr. Sessa, he's been volunteered (by the sandbox) to host the now week-end long sandbox party.
