Crumbs and tidbits

BlueMoonBunKathleen sent me this link to her blog entry about the Food Network's series "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," which will be shooting at the Blue Moon Cafe in Fells Point on April 18 and 21, according to a waitress there. Odd, because I don't think of Blue Moon as a diner, drive-in or dive.

* Federal Hill Jim praised the story in last week's Washington Post on noise in restaurants (Which Larry S. had earlier brought to my attention; thanks to you both) and suggested I might want to do a Top Ten on Baltimore's noisiest. I thought I might have already (I'm starting not to remember them all), but instead we've just discussed the subject frequently, for instance, here and here

*I had heard that the Blue Point Grille in Ellicott City had closed, but Jack sent me this interesting tidbit:

New sign just put up this weekend - new sign is Chun-Churum in English and in Korean. New restaurant obviously geared to Howard County Korean population. Another independent restaurant bites the dust.

* Great Harvest Bread Co., a self-described "whole grain bakery," is hoping to open in the Baltimore area. There are already Columbia and Annapolis locations.

* Chowhound wrote me he saw at Tark's Grill:

...a preppy family come in and the boy was carrying a...lacrosse stick. The manager smilingly put it in the coatroom.

I pass it along because, yes, that's the kind of restaurant it is.

re. Tark's Grill: gack. (Is there an appropriate non-food-related equivalent of "gack"?) Leave it in the car, for pete's sake.

Happy to hear about Great Harvest coming up here. Their breads are fantastic, very hearty and satisfying.

I think gack is probably a satisfying all-purpose expression. EL

In town to nurse a 30-something child. She wanted carryout from Banjara in South Baltimore. The phone was disconnected even though the webpage was up. When did it disappear?

For years you had to go to NYC to get decent bread so it's nice that there are several places in the area that are worth going to. What I don't understand though is why there is such a dearth of good fresh bagels. Come to think of it, it's not like there's New York style deli on every block either!

There is another restaurant wher D,DI & D's will be filming during the same time frame. Te Stone Creek INN in Pasadena, off of Ft. Smallwood Road. I got this information straight from the owner.

Banjara closed late last year. At least for a while it was operated by the same folks as the Indian restaurant in Tuscany-Canterbury (Ambassador?), which was far superior. Site, now vacant, was the focus recently of a successful neighborhood effort to block what was perceived as a night club in restaurant guise.

What I really miss is New York Deli potato salad. Made with sliced, not diced, potatoes. Whenever I go up to New York I always bring back several pounds of the stuff, usually from the Stage Deli, 7th Avenue around 53rd Street.

I'm so glad Blue Moon's cinnamon rolls are finally getting the attention they deserve.

I'm driving past Chum-Churum later today and was going to check it out.
