Dreaming of Breadbar

Breadbar.jpg

I'm in moving hell. I know I said I don't pack and I don't move, but yesterday I came to my senses. We weren't going to get out of here before April 1 if I didn't pitch in, and I'm still not sure we will.

I canceled my farewell tour of L.A. No last pizza at Mozza, no last hike in Runyon Canyon, no last movie at the beautiful ArcLight.

Besides things to be packed up...

...and things still to be sold, there are many last-minute errands to be run. I won't bore you with the details, but let me just say Kingman, Ariz. (5 1/2 hours away), may be a bit ambitious for our first night. The problem is that if we don't get off before 3 p.m., we might as well wait until after 7 because of L.A. traffic.

Definitely no interesting dinner at some local restaurant we discovered in Arizona. We'll be lucky if we have a pit stop sandwich along route 40.

Having said that, I'm looking at the TripTik between here and Kingman. Did you know between Newberry Springs and Needles (205 miles) there are no services? I'm guessing that doesn't mean no Starbucks.

I think I'll accompany this with a photo of the exterior of the Breadbar, one of the many places I never got to in the almost five years my daughter lived here.

This is quickly descending into farce. (Do you have enough boxes?) Before it gets there I'm hoping for a strong dose of slapstick.

Nope, we got all too big ones. Now back to Home Depot. Interesting factoid: people give moving boxes away free on CraigsList. (We didn't get there quickly enough.) EL

Sorry to learn that the move has gotten off to an inauspicious start. Here's hoping things get better.

Somewhere on another thread, Rosebud mentioned our upcoming Bloggers' Party. To bring us up to speed, the Party will take place on Saturday, April 19, at an establishment in Fells Point. We have yet to determined time and place.

Do we want a place with a private room, assuming we could use it? Do we want to meet for lunch, or closer to the dinner hour? We are hoping for someplace that is moderately priced, conducive to conversation, serving a food and alcohol.

Rosebud, have I covered everything? Let's make some suggestions for place (someone named two places on a different thread; I think Red Star was one of them). How about we toss some names into the Sandbox and get chatting? Maybe we can decide on a place by the end of this weekend ...

Thanks, kids!

That covers it, Piano Rob. I'd lean more towards a private room, if available, for lunch or mid-afternoon so that we'd have enough time to meet and eat and talk without worrying about the Saturday night rush and crowd.

Reading the BreadBar menu makes me wish I was eating something more than carrots and seasoned almonds for lunch. Maybe your daughter will ask you to help her move furniture into a narrow rowhouse next... (I'm not sure why my parents still speak to me.)

Both Koopers Tavern and The Red Star have private upstairs dining rooms.

Chill, forget about your schedule, take an extra day, hit the tennis courts, get a decent meal and get maybe an hour or two outside of LA and call it a day.

If it makes you feel better, having moved dozens of times over the course of my lifetime, moving never goes well.

Once when moving my dad we backed a full-size Ryder truck up to the front door and loaded it with stuff, including his piano and literally thousands of books. In the space of about 30 minutes the sky clouded over and a torrential rainfall came, soaking the lawn. The truck sank into the lawn up to the top of the hubcaps. We had to unload it and use two tow trucks to pull it out.

So I'd say that so far you're doing quite well.

How are bread-centered restaurants/establishments doing in this economy?

So I'd say that so far you're doing quite well.

So, other than that, how did you like the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

I submit the First Vote ... Koopers Tavern ...

Kathy was correct about the private rooms. Koopers' prices are more moderate than Red Star's. I'll give them a call and see if they can accommodate us.

Btw - what time are we looking at? Does noon on Saturday 4/19 sound good?

I have been off in book land and have not checked the blog in 2 days. I have been obsessed with these book and can't put them down. Back to the point. Koopers sounds good. I love a good brunch. Though if my family has any say they will not let me go...they are afraid of me meeting "those strange internet people".

Sarah - Pay no attention to that noise coming from your family. No one in the Sandbox is a part of "those strange internet people." Well, okay, maybe OMG.

Update: I have e-mailed Koopers from their webpage telling Patrick who we are and requesting information for our 4/19 party. I'll let you all know when/if I hear from him. Of course, it's entirely possible that I scared him by telling him who we are.

Sarah, I'm bringing my husband for protection in case a food fight breaks out. I'll be the one with cream puffs.

Sounds great, Piano Rob!

Sarah, pay them no mind. On the 19th, ask me how I met my Hubby.

Imagine, strange internet people actually are developing a plan. Who knew kidnapping unsuspecting dates could be this easy? And if we each keep moving around the room, no one will notice the puddles of drool on the floor.

No one in the Sandbox is a part of "those strange internet people." Well, okay, maybe OMG.

Where is OMG, anyway. There hasn't been a peep from him for a day or two. And our porky friend has been quiet, too.

Rosebud, I accidentally clicked on your personal site when going to this thread. We like a lot of the same things, but I was disappointed that no one from D@L showed up in your list of people you'd like to meet. You did include Julia Child. Rosebud, I hate to be the one to tell you, but she has passed on to the big kitchen in the sky. She's a personal hero of mine as well.

Maybe OMG, the porker and Pierre are refraining from posting during the road trip.

Yes, I miss them. EL

It's ok, Dahlink, I do know she's gone.:-)
When I listed the people I wanted to meet it was just an off-the-top-of-my-head thing. I looked at it as kind of like Steve Allen's PBS series called, IMS, Meeting of Minds where people from throughout history discussed various issues.

You did notice, didn't you, that this blog tops my admittedly short list of favorite food sites.

My page is certainly still "under construction" and I will be adding a lot more to it as time permits.

Rosebud--I'm looking forward to meeting my virtual twin (not Bobbsey) on the 19th!

Dahlink, the 19th is going to be so much fun. Especially finally putting faces to the personas.

Speaking of the 19th, I haven't heard back from Patrick @ Koopers yet regarding their upper room, but I will call about it.

Not to diss our beloved Ace, has anyone else noticed the quickness of our postings? LOL

But didn't she say she would have 3 people covering for her?

Anything from Koopers yet, Rob?
