More recent restaurants we miss

OmikazeSoigneAmy K. posted this under Next Week's Top Ten, so you may have missed it:

Will be interested in seeing the list of restaurants that closed in 2007.  Two that come to mind: Nichi Bei Kai in Towson and Wolford's European Bakery in Towson.

I was glad that someone brought up the subject of more recent closings, although I love the memories your posts brought up about restaurants I haven't thought of in years. People did mention a few not-so-ancient ones: Soigne, Ruby Lounge, Wild Mushroom, Saffron under Edward Kim. I would add Vespa in Federal Hill. Any others? Maybe not that closed in 2007, although if you can come up with 10 that did, more power to you. Gardel's is the only one that comes immediately to mind, but if necessary I have the luxury of going back and looking through The Sun's archives.

The Nichi Bei Kai on York Rd closed? Wow. The one in Columbia is still open though, and it's excellent. .

Bangkok Place. Just thought of it. Not 2007, likely 2005. The apartments that now fill that property are a sure sign Baltimore does not have an architectural review board.

M. Gettier on Broadway Street.

Sorry, wrong thread. They've been gone some 15 years.

Does anyone know what happened to Wolford's? I used to enjoy coffee and a pastry there on occasion.

Now this is more of a bar, but the Ropewalk in Bel Air closed in 2007. It wasn't opened very long. The one in Federal Hill is still around.

And, I can't believe I'm offering this up, but the McDonalds on Falls Road across from Western High school closed down.

Please, someone explain to me how that McDonald's could not make a killing in that location. High school kids don't eat burgers?

It has now been 275 minutes since the last blog reponse entry on this site. Help, I must be addicted. Checking back every couple of hours for more to read, a little bit of OMG, some words of wisdom from Hal; I am starting to get the shakes. Maybe I'll drive around the city and try to come up with ideas for the next TTT.

I had to go reviewing so there was no one to publish them, but they're here now. :-)

I'm surprised to hear that Wolford's closed - especially since I work a block away. But that strip of Chesapeake Avenue seems like such a tough area to do business.

Elizabeth-
I suspect the closure of McDonald's on Falls Road has to do with the lack of parking and absence of drive thru.

Good point.

Hang on baby bird Alan, I'll feed you.

I loved Bangkok Place. It was never the coolest Thai place, but I liked its food bestest. Good specials that made you feel that Thai food was regional, home cooked, and multi-dimensional, whatever that means. Their tom yum soup was the best after the original Thai Restaurant on Greenmount, which may or may not still be there. Their prices were great and you could ask the chef to make you something authentic that wasn't for round eyes, you know, and he would serve up some crazy hot fish salad monster dish that he made for the staff at lunch.

Thai love, not just for ... never mind. I loved the unpretentious booths and lack of downtown poseurs. Yeah I said it, you know who you are!

Re: McDonald's Falls Road. Is it closed for good or just being replaced? The McD's on North Ave. between Charles and Maryland was completely torn down and rebuilt. I guess that must have been cheaper than just refitting the place with new equipment. Just a thought, because I agree with Elizabeth's suggestion that the Fall's Road location has to be a cash cow.

The Akbar they closed and leveled on Charles and Lombard to build a parking garage.

The Pacific Rim in Cockeysville. They had a dish called Jai Yuk Gwey (spelling?) that was to die for. As far as I know there isn't another restaurant in town that has this dish.

The Akbar closed and leveled? I haven't been to that part of downtown for a while and didn't know!

Best closing of a restaurant I never went to: Ras Doobie's, and its follow up Penn Street Tavern. Warthog recommended these places constantly, and just as often I failed to make it to either of them. I still regret it.

I am DYING to know why Wolford's Bakery closed and whether there are any plans to reopen? They made the best cakes with buttercream icing! I am so bummed...

It's always hard to find out why places closed once they're closed. EL
