Eating really late

LateNight

Ex-deskmate Steve (who has moved over to work in metro) was looking for a place to go for late-night food after a play and complaining that nothing has quite replaced Louie's the Bookstore Cafe.

I did a Top Ten on late-night restaurants in August. (It seems so weird now that it generated only six comments.) I'm sure since then many more places have opened up. ...

Didn't someone post a comment on this blog saying that he or she had eaten at RA really late? Harbor East probably has several places that weren't even on my radar in August. I think the new Baltimore Pho across from the Hollins Market also has a late-night menu. The new Meli in Fells Point serves food until 1 a.m., and would be a particularly good place to go for dessert.

As I've said before, late-night noshing isn't really my thing, so Steve will have to rely on all of you for other recommendations. Any info you can give us on the late-night menu would also be welcome.

Man, nothing even comes close to the old Louie's. Except their fries were always kinda lame/limp.

I think late-night eating (as opposed to dining) is limited unless you're talking a Friday or Saturday night - and it also depends on the definition of "late." For me, "late" means after midnight (or later), but after-theatre could be 10:30 or 11pm.

Up til 11pm:
My go-to choice is Woodberry Kitchen - while I find the food to be top-notch, I do have friends that work there so take that for what you will.

After 11pm:
Joe Squared
Jack's Bistro

After Midnight:
Nam Kang
Sabatino's - gnocchi

All Night Last Resort:
Captain James
Sip N Bite
Paper Moon
Nautilus Diner

Is the pho at Baltimore pho anygood anyone know? It be nice not to have to go to far for a bowl of that delicious soup. Yum.

Nam Kang at 22nd and Maryland serves food for most of the night. They used to be open, and may still be, until 4 am. The menu is somewhat limited that late, but nothing beats a korean pancake (very eggy) on your way home from a night out.

I'm not the Eric above, but I second Nam Kang when an old roomate and I would go there for at 2 am hungry for some panchan and bulgogi.

If all you need is late-night dessert and coffee, Vaccaro's is your answer ... either Little Italy or its newish O'Donnell Square location. It feels more like a diner inside than Louie's did, but they make delicious desserts at sizes made to share.

But I have to second the thought of the commenter on the last late-night post ... Dog Pub in Federal Hill is an excellent choice for pizza and salads late at night. And BOP (Brick Oven Pizza) in Fells Point has good pizza by the slice with a long list of toppings to choose from.

I just noticed that Mt. Vernon Stable is also open until midnight, until 1 a.m. on weekends.

can't believe I forgot this from elarge's column yesterday:

Cheap (everything is relative) eats // If you've always wanted to eat at Oceanaire Seafood Room in Harbor East but it seemed too pricey, check out the bar menu, new as of last week. It's available 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close. The offerings include four different salads for $3.95, red chili calamari for $4.95, dollar oysters, lobster flatbread for $12.95 and much more - not to mention the $7 glasses of red and white wines available during happy hour.

The kitchen at Midtown Yacht Club is generally open till 1 a.m. (a bit earlier on a slow night). Nearby for you Sun people, at least.

Remember GAMPy's on North Charles Street? We used to eat there after theater all the time, in my young/artsy/hanging out in Mt. Vernon days. Wild decor, eclectic artist-servers, and a menu that was all over the map, as I recall. I guess they're long gone by now?

GAMPy's (did anyone ever call them by their real name?) is long gone. I used to go there a long time ago in another life when I would do crazy things like associating with theater people.

I couldn't swear to it, but I think Hal just insulted me and my kind ("theater people"). We might be crazy but we're always fun to associate with. LOL

GAMPy's was fun and closed mysteriously. It's taken a while but it appears that something new may actually be going into that building.

Please keep me posted about this. Thanks!

Francesca,
I've been to the new BaltimorePho in Hollins Market (twice), and whilst the Pho is not my fave - broth is lacking depth and a bit skimpy on the portion size - it certainly suffices for a city Vietnamese place. The fish cakes are amazing, the best I've had here in Baltimore. Def worth checking out. Bc they're new the menu is continually evolving.

I think Hal just insulted me and my kind ("theater people").

Hey, I like theater people! But let's not pretend they're normal. :-)

Then again, being normal is overrated.

EL - I will definitely keep an eye on the progress of the former GAMPY's. Also there is a new deli supposedly opening up on South Street across from the Au Bon Pain. Word on the street is that the new place will have food that is comparable to ABP but a lot less pricey - to which I say"Bravissimo!"

Hal, I never said anything about theatre people being normal. I'm proud to be somewhat over-dramatic and, well, theatrical, even if I have to do it all from the keyboard! (I was going to use the term Drama Queen but there are those individuals who hold that crown far better than I!)

Looking forward to any news you can send my way. Thanks.

Another sign of a good food city; a really good place to go for late night drunk food with all the major food groups (protein, starch, fried) spoken for.

Because let's be honest- after you've had several too many, something hot, meaty, and just out of the fry-o-lator is right in that comfort zone. At least two out of the three of protein, starch, and fried are an absolute drunk food minimum.

I'll have to try Nam King if I'm over that way.

When I asked this question of Elizabeth, she sent me to the new Lemongrass, just east of Little Italy, so I want to put in a plug for them. It was a cool, chic space. We lounged on couches in the bar and ordered from the regular menu. This was around 11 p.m. on a Wednesday, and no one batted an eye when we asked for menus. I'll definitely go back.
