Post-burger-posting musings

I'm sitting here reading the very entertaining comments under my Top Ten Burgers post this morning and thinking:

* I love the fact that even a couple of vegetarians posted their favorite burgers before they stopped eating meat.

* I wonder why only Alonso's of the local places generated such controversy, both pro and con.

* I should have divided burgers into separate Top Tens (Best Diner Burgers -- love this category, Best Fast Food Burgers, Best Frou Frou Burgers, Best Bar Burgers etc.).

* Should I be surprised that in a seafood town like Baltimore a post on where to find the best raw oysters got 1,000 hits while a post on burgers got 10,000?

* Why didn't anyone at the Sun mention until today that Five Guys opened a franchise at Centre and Park (a closer walk than the harbor)?

* Why won't Richard Crystal tell us what he really thinks of the Prime Rib?

New topic? Best non-meat or veggie burgers. Turkey? Lentil?

Maybe because if you're eating a Five Guys burger you could use the longer walk?

That must be it. I feel better now.

How about Jilly's in Pikesville? Has someone missed the boat or what?

I was unimpressed with the one burger I've had at Jilly's. Everything else I've had there (Nachos, salads, fish sandwich) has been great, not to mention the enormous portions, which made the burger all the more disappointing.

I had a buffalo burger at Jilly's about a year ago and it was very good. I would definitely venture back for that -- not many restuarants do buffalo burgers very well (ex. The Still)

Let me preface this by saying that I really like the Prime Rib. No matter how many new steakhouses come to town, I remain enamored of their beef. That is just a personal preference. But, I laughed like crazy at Richard Crystals posting and am just so curious as to what sets him off about the place. I hope he returns with more info.

As to raw oysters. I am a native Baltimoron, but I would not touch a raw oyster with a ten-foot pool. So, it did not surprise me that a post on that topic did not surpass hamburgers. But, I also had no idea that you got that number of hits, 1000, on any topic. At that rate, The Sun will be offering you a raise any day now. You go girl.

I have heard stories about the infamous Ponca Bird on Ponca Street heading into Dundalk. One of my good friends says it is the place to go. A bit scary from the outside, but Elizabeth, I think you need to make a jaunt over there!

Drew said - "A bit scary from the outside, but Elizabeth, I think you need to make a jaunt over there!"

No..just send Sam.

Now wait a minute here ...

One of the great tragedies is that because of safety concerns (e.coli)and fear of being sued, enjoying that medium rare burger has pretty much been taken away almost anywhere you go now. You can take the best ground beef, but if you cook it well done it'll get dried out. If an establishment is getting their supply from a third party, they're probably just protecting themselves by enacting the "well done only" policy.

As far as a suggestion, to tag off of Drew's comment, maybe a top ten "scary on the outside, yummy on the inside" hole-in-the-wall type places.

Sorry, Sam...(ducking and running...)
