Press releases I never finished reading
The subject line is "Valentine's Day -- It's Sooner Than You Think."
OK, I guess. It's always good to think ahead. And if you're planning to take your sweetie out to dinner, it wouldn't be a bad idea to make reservations at your favorite restaurant pretty soon. (Valentine's Day falls on a Thursday this year, in case you're wondering. See how informative reading this blog can be?)
Anyway, I trashed the press release, from a company called Pure Romance, when I got to the second Valentine's Day Tip: ...
1) Don’t use Valentine's Day as a Band-Aid to cover up your relationship wounds –- view it as a reminder for encouraging one another to work on your relationship.
2) Communicate. The gift of communication is more important than chocolate.
WHAT? Right there they lost me. That is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. In fact, it's not too early to put in your order at one of these fine local chocolatiers. And don't forget that Glarus has opened a second shop downtown since that earlier post.

Valentine's Day??? I haven't even put away my Christmas decorations yet. And you are exactly right--chocolate-- good chocolate trumps talking for a Valentine's Day gift.

Speaking of V-Day, should I just book the restaurant I want or wait for some romantic suggestions from a "Top Ten"?
Ask and ye shall receive. I think the general consensus was that it would be too much of a cliche to wait until Valentine's Day, although my list might be different now with all the new places opening up:

I went to Target the day after Christmas to get diapers for the baby and they not only had all the Christmas stuff reorganized and on sale (obviously) but they had out the Valentine's Day clothes for kids and some of the other gift merchandise. WHAT!! I almost threw up a little.

I don't mean to start another holiday row, but 'Valentine's Day CLOTHES for KIDS' ?????? Clothes!!!!!! Dinner for 2, quiet, candle lit, all the other cliches, okay. Clothes?

I know I know...I certainly didn't BUY the clothes I just saw them on my way to the diapers. However, the shirts did feature the ever famous conversation hearts....

Ah, Valentine's Day ... yet another saint's feast re-imagined to make those of us who are single feel, well, more alone. I better make a reservation now so that Single Robert doesn't get the last one-top for himself and his latest book!

Robert (TSO)'s secret for dealing with Hallmark Holidays: If you must observe them (Mother's Day being the biggy) transfer them to a different date. What does it matter what day you take Mom out for dinner? Only Hallmark cares. If your Mom is so insecure in your love that not taking her out on that magical Sunday (second? third?) in May devastates her, get a new Mom (and a good book.)
Hey, Rob: its TV dinner on the 14th for me. Its not worth the hassle. What's really tough is that the 13th is my Bday. Hard to get a table then, too. Randy folk who can't wait, I guess.

Robert (TSO): LOL on getting a new Mom. Fortunately mine is happy with a phone call; ya gotta love that.
As far as ValDay goes, I'll be too busy with dress rehearsal to worry about dining out and getting a table. But we should get a group of Large Bloggers together (with our books) and meet on the 10th to pre-celebrate your b-day. We could even ask Elizabeth choose the place! [Which reminds me, I need a new book; luckily Stephen King's newest is out in a couple of weeks.]

There are definitely too many Roberts and Robs posting here. My head is spinning (and not because of Stephen King ...)

This is a great idea. Anyone else up for it? I could bring some friends for the single Rob(ert)s. Or at least a good book.

Rob: I'll bite (bad pun for a food blog, but what are you going to do?) if you care to share - dress rehearsal for what?
Darlene: Hey, don't blame me on the name thing. That's on Mom's plate (another bad pun, sorry.) Spinning Darlene heads, now that's something I'd pay good money to see.
Mary: Hasn't your mother told you of the dangers of on-line dating? Read the posts on the Christmas dinner imbroglio. According to the posts, I have at least 2 heads (one a spinner) and eat young children, braised.

Darlene - "My head is spinning"
Just to keep this food related - pea soup, anyone?

Robert (TSO): The dress rehearsal will be for the musical "Pageant" that opens February 15 at the Spotlighters Theatre. Shameless self-promotion aside, it's an insanely funny spoof of beauty pageants with nary a biological female in sight. The show runs through March 9. Thanks for asking about it! My producer and director will be pleased. (I'll be the person at the keyboard plunking out the tunes.)
