Of Waitress and other foodie movies

Darlene suggested a post on foodie movies, which coincided with the fact that I rented the DVD of Waitress on my vacation -- and enjoyed it. But I enjoyed it because of Keri Russell's performance, not because of the pies involved.
In fact, for some reason I don't go to films because they are about food. I've never seen Big Night or Babette's Feast, although I liked Chocolat and sat through Sideways.
What can I say? The Food Network doesn't do it for me either.
However, I know I'm in the minority here, so here are some other suggestions: ...
Like Water for Chocolate
My Dinner With Andre
Eat Drink Man Woman
Super Size Me
Tampopo
These are all pretty obvious, though. If you have some others you would recommend, please tell us not only the names but their appeal.

Comments
I liked Fast Food Nation; though disheartening at times, the appeal was an interesting look into how the fast food industry operstes.
Soul Food the movie with Vanessa Williams because its theme used food to show how family dinners can bring everyone together.

How about the movie "Fatso" starring Dom DeLuise.

I felt like I was being judged eating popcorn at Fast Food Nation
There's a whole genre of tasty cannibal movies, such as Eating Raoul and The Thief, The Cook, etc.
I love the scene in Oldboy where the guy eats a live octopus. Now that's sashimi!
Food-related movie I'd like to see: Rachel Ray Shark Attack!

Vatel is tremendous. Gerard Depardieu stars as François Vatel, the 17th century French chef who threw a decadent feast for Louis XIV and 2000 of his friends. When the fish was late he killed himself. If you ever wanted to know how to serve lark hearts, this is the movie for you.

Keri Russell? She's cute, but Nathan Fillion was the real reason to see that movie.
One of my favorite food movies is Babette's Feast.
And...I love Fatso!
I have to agree. I'm a huge Firefly fan.

Not a "food" movie per se, but one of my all time favorite movie scenes is the egg eating contest in "Cool Hand Luke."

The opening scene of the old Billy Crystal movie "Mr. Saturday Night" when the camera pans over the dinner table with its mish-mash of dirty dishes (and an unfortunately used ashtray) you just know that someone enjoyed the heck out of their meal.

The God of Cookery (parody of cooking shows like Iron Chef)
and
Koroshi no rakuin (hit man addicted to the smell of boiling rice)

Mostly Martha, hands down. That rarest of all things, a German romantic comedy. The Catherine Zeta-Jones movie No Reservations was a pedestrian remake.

Yeah, Mostly Martha is an uncommonly pleasant German movie.

Possibly the best, and certainly the king of the "noodle-western" genre has to be Tampopo, about a truck driving man and the ramen slinging girl with a heart of gold.

Hah! I knew people on this blog would have good suggestions. Now to add some of these suggestions to my queue on Netflix. If we are including cartoons, Ratatouille is an obvious addition to the list, even if the chef is a rat. I loved Waitress. but watching this charming and quirky film was bittersweet knowing that the writer and director, Adrienne Shelly, who also plays the waitress Dawn, was murdered before the film had its big break.

I don't usually watch "food movies" per se, but I did just recently happen to see Waitress, which was... meh. (Andy Griffith was the best part.)
I also saw The Big Night years ago, and I didn't care for it, either.
Ratatouille, on the other hand, was great. Even if it is about "rats" (cartoon rats, yes, but rats all the same).

Sweeney Todd - love those meat pies...;)

My wife, who is apparently a fan of not only bad scripts, but bad acting as well, loves "Goodburger." I actually sat through most of it when we were both sick a few weeks back. Prior to watching it she assured me that she had seen it before and thought it was cute....oh how i wish i could get those 80 minutes of my life back...

I’ll third Mostly Martha, and add Dinner Rush as the only good restaurant movie I’ve ever seen.

I'm surprised (especially considering recent threads) that nobody has mentioned the Baltimore classic "Diner" yet

The real sleeper is 'Rare Birds' with William Hurt. I urge for you all to see it. You won't be disappointed.

Tortilla Soup - a fantastic movie about three sisters and their chef father. A very food-centric movie

I'm not a huge movie fan, but like you I sat through Sideways and wish I could get those minutes of my life back. How about the dinner scene from Tom Jones (for those old enough to remember it)?

I would have to add "The Spitfire Grill" and "Fried Green Tomatoes" to the list. I can't help it - I enjoy a good chick flick. Then, we could do a sequel blog of "food scenes" but that would be an entire website in and of itself. Such as James Cagney and the grapefruit; the "Love with All the Trimmings" scene in "On a Clear Day"; the fat man devouring a cream puff in "Victor/Victoria" (not to mention the cockroach scene); etc.

If you rent the DVD of "Ratatouille," note the extra features. There is a fun segment with Thomas Keller, of the French Laundry and other restaurants.
Rob's proposed sequel blog of great food scenes would have to include Albert Finney lasciviously eating that chicken leg while ogling the woman with the cleavage in "Tom Jones."

Soul Food
Chocolat

A big thank you to Matt H. and others who recommended "Mostly Martha," which we watched last night. Ausgezeichnet! Anyone who loves food may well love this film. I noticed a credit for "Koch-coaching" at the end. (Did anyone else see a resemblance between the male lead and Linguini in "Ratatouille"?)
