The Sun Holiday Luncheon: an early review
For the first time in all the years I've worked here, The Sun had a holiday luncheon for the employees today. (Can I say Christmas luncheon? The cafeteria workers were all wearing Santa hats. In fact, can I say lunch?)
When copy editor extraordinaire Helen and I planned our annual Christmas lunch, which we've been doing for years...
...we were going to go someplace nice within walking distance like Sotto Sopra or Sascha's 527. But this has been such a rough year for the paper, and we've had so much sad news toward the end of the year, we decided instead to go to the first-ever Sun Christmas lunch and exchange our presents there. (The fact that the food was free had nothing to do with it.)
I hadn't known they were going to decorate, so I brought a little tree from the desk of an editor with us to brighten up the table.
I knew one person was going to have to say it, and it was copy editing chief John, who was standing behind us in line:
"Are you going to review this meal?"
So here goes.
I avoided the turkey roll, and had a slice of ham, canned corn, a couple of roast potatoes, broccoli and pasta salad, canned cranberry sauce and sugar cookies. (Hey, it's gray and gloomy, and I'm carbo-loading.) Because I was happy to be there with an old friend, and a couple more joined us, it tasted fine. The price was right, too. Through the years we all will be together.
If the fates allow.

I'm just glad to see to see there was some red meat at a Sun function. I was thinking the offerings would tofu and some kind of bean/rice/lentil salad.
I really need to stop being so cynical.

You should of tried the stuffing. It was actually pretty yummy. It was a nice affair to spend with other colleagues. I'm glad I attended.

When I worked at The Sun, it was still family-owned. Our department was treated to a fancy end-of-year dinner party (the women brought cocktail dresses to change into in the rest rooms). It was usually held in a private room at a good restaurant or nearby hotel. Service awards and bonus checks were distributed at the party, so it was quite festive! Nice memories...do companies do that kind of thing anymore?

It's so brave to criticize others from behind the veil of anonymity.

Not to be picky either Mr./Mrs. Anonymous...but not everyone who works for a newspaper is in the editorial department; living and breathing grammar. Thanks for calling that employee out and Merry Christmas to you too!

My biggest pet peeve with blogs/forums is when someone tries to belittle another user by making comments about grammar and spelling. On-line comments are not dissertations. Most of us type our comments out in a few minutes. It is not indicative of intelligence or education if we have a typo or a run on sentence.

So that's where went the $15,000 they saved by cutting out the employee recognition awards.
