Happy New Year -- achoo!

champagne.jpg

My husband surprised me a few days ago by saying he wanted to take me out to dinner tonight and he had made reservations. But now everyone has come down with the just-shoot-me-in-the-face, sore-throat-and-congestion bug, so we're staying in.

I'm cooking biftek hache, to be eaten with champagne and followed by a demitasse of Nyquil.

Happy New Year to all of you! Thanks for reading this blog, for contributing (even when you're feeling cranky), and for making this my most fun year at work ever.

Here's hoping 2008 is even better.

That sounds suspiciously like hamburger. :-)

But with a French accent.

Happy New Year to you, Elizabeth, from one sicko stuck at home to another this night...thanks for the great blog!

At midnight, I will toast a shot of Nyquil to you and The Funny Roberts!

Ah, poor babies. Hope y'all feel better.

So, where were you going to go before you opted for biftek hache?

My original plan was to make pate and a roast duck, but last night I ended up at Petit Louis where I had the Alsace menu of foie gras, pork and sausages and the wife had the sweetbreads. Not wanting to start 2008 off with a case of gout, we opted for some sashimi at Chiyo Sushi instead

Oh, and FYI, when you google "biftek hache", your biftek hache comes up number three...right between Wolfgang Puck and Julia Child.

So sorry to hear the Large household is under the weather. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to all.

We stayed home for New Year's Eve by choice and tried the Lobster Cobb salad (found in the Sun's food section). It was fabulous! We also had our traditional black-eyed pea salad for good luck, of course, and will have it again tonight to hedge our bets.

We also stayed home by choice. I'd intended to have lobster, but found out that my local Safeway no longer sells whole lobsters. I was too lazy to drive downtown to Faidley's or out to the Giant in Dundalk, so I picked up a pound of jumbo lump crabmeat (Chesapeake Bay, no Asian stuff) and made crabcakes instead. They were delicious!

I find it interesting that I can no longer buy lobster in supposedly upscale Canton, but I can easily get it in the more blue-collar Dundalk.

About the lobster: I'm not sure about the dead ones but its probably because Whole Foods down the street doesn't carry live ones anymore.

No offense, but the ban is silly I think.
