Kosher winners

Kosher Community Surveys LLC  has released the results of its second annual Baltimore area kosher survey, and the overall winners are:

Best Kosher Restaurant: David Chu's China Bistro
Best Kosher Bakery: Goldman's Kosher Bakery
Best Kosher Store: Wasserman & Lemberger

As you can probably guess from the name, the company conducts surveys about kosher food establishments and then publishes them. It's kind of interesting that a Chinese restaurant would be the most popular. The full report on Baltimore area places can be found on its Web site.

When I lived in Boston, Kosher Chinese restaurants were quite popular in a neighborhood called Brookline which is predominantly Jewish. The marriage between Chinese food and Kosher cooking standards has been around for quite some time. FYI - for those looking to eat out on Christmas, Chinese is always an option.

Hey, SGI!! Don't give away our secret!

In November '68, my great-grandfather died and my mom went to New York City for the funeral and shiva. With no one left in the house who knew how to cook a Thanksgiving dinner, we (my dad, 8-year-old brother, and 10-year-old me) went to a Chinese place that year. Very Ralphie and Randy.

Chinese food lends itself well to kosher cooking because there's little to no dairy to mix with the meat, which sidesteps one major prohibition, and most dishes focus on a single protein, so simply eliminating all the pork and shrimp (and other shellfish) preparations from the menu sidesteps the other major prohibition.

That said, I find it distressing that David Chu's takes this award simply because I've always found their food over-sweetened and their sauces too thick, even when I request less cornstarch. I'd have said Kosher Bite has better kosher Chinese, and that either Accents or The Brasserie (which I haven't been to in ages, admittedly) would be a better "Best Restaurant". Ah well....
