The virtual bulletin board

BulletinBoard.jpg

I might have a post, for instance, that tells you I've found a dark chocolate sauce as good as my mother made, and it's the store brand at Whole Foods.

Or I would post my lost Brownberry Bread. To answer Rachel's post,

Which type of bread is it specifically? Are you sure its not sold under one of their other brands? Arnold?

Arnold took it over, and now only sells it in certain parts of the country. They used to have a service where they would mail loaves out, but they discontinued that. Now I have to bring it from Florida, and since I've vowed never again to check luggage until I'm dead, that's hard to do. But I digress, as usual.

Anyway, if I had a virtual bulletin board, there would be one place where all of us could post our lost or misplaced food items, and maybe someone else would be able to help us find them.

Elizabeth --
We live in West Palm Beach. If we find the Brownberry Bread, we can always mail or UPS it to you.

That's very kind of you. I actually have a cousin who lives in West Palm, but I'm hoping to find a source closer to home so no one will have to be put out.

I would love this!...I can't find Mrs. Crutchfield's fat-free lemon poppyseed muffin mix anymore. I live in York, PA, but would purchase several boxes on trips back to Baltimore. Now I can't find the mixes at all.

One of my favorite cookies disappeared from grocery shelves a few years ago. It was a raisin biscuit cookie, packaged in neat, flat rows. I think Nabisco made it. When I ask for it no one knows what I'm talking about. I miss them...

According to their website, Peapod
(http://products.peapod.com/730.html) delivers Brownberry products.

There's a long list of products; maybe the bread you want is among them.

I went straight to the site; but, alas, Peapod hasn't reached my Zip code yet. They are going to e-mail me when it does. Thanks!

Slickthecat, I remember those raisin biscuit cookies. Unfortunately, I never liked them--maybe that's the problem.

Re slickthecat's raisin cookies: I know exactly the ones you mean; very flat, with scalloped edges and a shiny egg wash on top. We called them "squashed flies." Sounds awful, but they really were delicious with a cup of tea. I've too noticed they're gone.
And taking a poll here: Does anyone remember a salty snack that Arnold used to make, way back in the mid-60's, called "Pea-Sen"? Small rectangular snacks with flecks of peanut in them. Delish, but long gone, I'm afraid.

Nabisco Brown Edged Wafers. They were simple but so tasty. I miss them.

I'd forgotten about Brown-Edged Wafers! Yes, they were great! I might have to try to recreate them at home.

The flat raisin cookies are called Girabaldi Biscuits. The last place I saw them (aside from Tesco) was the World Market in Rockville. I bought about six packs.

We used to have a cookie from left-over pie dough scraps and currants. It was called fly cemetaries. You can get them in scotland.

Somehow the thought of eating "fly cemeteries" doesn't make me hungry!

Try this link at the Vermont Country Store. This might be close to what you're looking for.

I too enjoyed the raisin biscuits. Since they've been gone I found that Newman's Own makes a similar and also delicious version called Hermits.

Thank you all for the raisin biscuit leads. I can't wait to taste them again.

Dromedary had the BEST gingerbread mix! I'd love to find it if it's still made. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Slickthecat, Vermont Country Store (www.VermontCountryStore.com) sells the Garibaldi cookies--I saw em just last week in the latest catalog. Good hunting!

Dromedary Gingerbread is now made by Tone Bros. (www.tones.com), the makers of Tone's Spices as well as French's mustard. There is a link to purchase it on their site. The best price I found was the case price - 12 boxes - from Edge Disributing (www.edgedist.com) but even there the shipping cost may put it out of your price range. It is also available at several "vintage" food websites.

i too love the raisen flat biscuit i cant find them anywhere in south carolina please let me know how i can get them thanks & waiting for that wonderful taste

Looking for a store selling the Dromedary line of cake mixes in North or South Carolina.

Thanks

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF YOU CAN STILL BUY NABISCO BROWN EDGED COOKIES?? I JUST LOVE THEM.

Nabisco Brown Edge Wafers were discontinued in 1996.

Arnold Bakery ruined Brownberry Bread once before and now Bimbo Bakery is doing it. Why doesn't Arnold fire the baker who again changed the receipe for Brownberry Whole Wheat Bread.
P. S. I understand that Bimbo is a subsidiary of Arnold.

Actually, J. Jack hansaen, Arnold is one of the brand names now controlled by Bimbo Bakeries USA, the American subsidiary of the giant Mexican food conglomerate Grupo Bimbo. Given its 60+ years of bakery experience, it is likely that somebody at Bimbo came up with any recent changes to the Brownberry recipe. Somehow I doubt that anybody at Arnold can fire a higher-up at Bimbo.

BIMBO Bakery? Really???

To anyone looking for raisin biscuits, try going to your local Asian market and find a package of Sultana Biscuits in the cookies/crackers aisle. The manufacturer is KHONG GUAN BISCUIT FACTORY of Singapore. They make lots of other good snacks too. These will satisfy your craving!

Correction: so it turns out Khong Guan is making the raisin biscuits in the Philippines now...either way they are still delicious!
