Tomatoes and an explosion
It's been awhile since I've been to the farmers market under the viaduct, what with the trip and all, and I was surprised to see that besides the expected fall bounty (apples, pumpkins, chrysanthemums etc.), Gardener's Gourmet still had beautiful heirloom tomatoes. The guy behind the counter said they would continue until first frost, which the way things are going may be never.
Unfortunately, I didn't know about the planned parking lot implosion. When it blew I was walking back to my car, and I thought the world had ended. Freaky. The noise was ear-shattering. The smoke was so dense you couldn't see ahead more than a foot or so, and the fumes smelled toxic. The cops directing traffic had gas masks; I hope they warned the farmers.

I live a mile or so from there, and was freaked out big time by the noise (I was still in bed when it happened). I had known they were going to demolish the old Mercy parking garage today, but it took a few minutes for me to realize that that's what the noise must have been.
This was about 7:30 this morning, though. I thought the farmers market didn't open until 8:00?
If you wait till 8 a.m. all the good stuff will be gone. :-) They are usually there by 7 a.m. I don't know how that changes as it gets light later, though.

Spoken like a morning person. As a night person stuck in a morning person's world, I'm not sure whether to be annoyed or jealous. :-)

Ignorance is bliss ... I have never been to the market earlier than 9 a.m., and so I never know what I'm missing. And sometimes when you go really late (around noon, when they're closing up) you can get good deals from farmers who don't want to carry their leftover fresh-picked goodies back home.

I'm a night person stuck in a morning person's world. I love that someone finally articulated it. Thanks Hal.
