Rock and raw tuna

I'm used to the concept of rock 'n' roll sushi from spending so much time on the West Coast, but it will be interesting to see if Baltimore is ready for it.

The folks at Ra Sushi think so. Sometime next year, probably as early as February, the Arizona-based chain will be opening a branch at 701 S. Eden St.

If you're into the Zen of sushi, this high-energy concept isn't for you. I asked their marketing people to send me a couple of photos from other locations, just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Slip a rock CD into your computer and turn the volume up full blast to get the full effect while you look at the photos.

When I first moved to Arizona last year, I checked out several locations of the Ra sushi chain. I absolutely loved them and wondered why we didn't have anything like this in Baltimore. Yes, it appeals mostly to the 20-30 something crowd, but I am a bit older than that, and I do go there on occassion. Of course, there are so many sushi places to choose from in Phoenix that I could go to a different one every night for a month and still not hit them all.

I am also a former Baltimore resident now living in Arizona and think Ra is fantastic. Hope the Baltimore branch is like the one in north Scottsdale where you can eat outside, enjoying the sushi and atmosphere.

This area will now be saturated with Sushi. In a few block radius you will have Chui's, currently my favorite, Tsunami, have not been but has a great look, and now RA. Something is going to have to give.
