The steak house question

I got this e-mail recently from Dan S. in Fallston:

In favorably commenting on "Ray's the Steaks" the Wash. Post (10/14)
said you would pay about half of what it would cost for a similar
dinner in DC. Are there any "Ray's" type places in the Balto area where
you can get a good steak without paying Prime Rib/Morton's  prices?

I can't think of any that aren't chains, but please feel free to offer suggestions. There was one in Canton on the square, whose name escapes me now, but it closed. (And if you can come up with its name, you get a gold star.)

There was one in Canton on the square, whose name escapes me now, but it closed.

I've lived near there (Butchers Hill) for about 16 years, and can't recall a steak place in Canton square. I wonder if you're thinking of Chester's, that was on Eastern Ave. in Fells Point, where Timothy Dean's is now?

I think you're right. I'm confusing it with Rick's Cafe Americain.

The Owl Bar. But that was before the new management and schizo menu changes. Not sure how it is now.

Several years ago I had a great steak frites at The Brewer's Art. I haven't been in a while though.

Great steaks can sometimes be found in surprising places. Many years ago I felt that the best steak to be had in the Fells Point area was at The Fishery (on Eastern Ave. where Timothy Dean's is now).

We think that Speakeasy in canton has a great steak (well a couple of them actually). No matter what night we have ordered one they have always been cooked just right and seasoned great but if you are looking for the big deal... I think it is either Mondays or Wednesdays they have 4 different steaks for only $15

Actually, you can get a great steak at a non-Morton's price, at Morton's Steakhouse now. They're running a steak and seafood special where 2 people for $99 total can each have a salad, a filet mignon, a seafood option (scallops, jumbo shrimp or crab cake), a shared veggie and potato side, and a dessert. That's the best deal I've come across in months -- a full meal, Morton's style, for $50 a person that includes everything except drinks. I think this special goes through mid-November. I'm sure its on their website www.mortons.com.
