Say Utz

utz.jpg

A request from Darlene for a new topic, and a request from danny bertrand for a commentary on Utz arrived under the Top Ten Crab Cakes post at literally the same moment, which seems like fate.

I live to serve, so here it is.

Because I haven't taken enough abuse today, I'll go ahead and admit it: In a blind taste test, I don't think I could tell the difference between an Utz potato chip and another chip. What makes Utz so special you'd have them brought in if you lived in Florida?

This request did take me to Utz's Web site, where there's a wonderful feature, Say Utz: How to Pronounce Our Name. I love that. It didn't occur to me that there would be more than one way to pronounce Utz. Just don't be wearing your Bose headphones when you put your cursor on it. It will blow you out of the water.

My parents moved to South Carolina after living all their lives in the Baltimore area. Evey time they come for a visit they leave with boxes of UTZ potato chips because they do not sell them down there. They also bring back Old Bay as well to steam crabs and shrimp since the seafood is so bland in SC.

I have to admit that I tend to forget that Utz chips are not actually made in Baltimore but in Hanover, PA.

I remember as a young girl going to Lexington Market with my grandmother and getting a bag of freshly made, still warm chips.

I always could tell the difference pre-no trans fat. I'm not sure if I could now since it's been a long time since I ate any potato chips.

This did bring to mind, though, a cute ad I noticed in a magazine. It showed Natty Boh on one knee proposing to the Utz girl and said something like a Baltimore-style engagement. It must have been for a jeweler, but I can't remember which one or which magazine.

The ad in the comment above is for Smyth Jewelers. There is actually a huge billboard on Charles Street just north of Penn Station. It's very, very cute!

I am by no means an Utz-Savant (is there such a thing?)...but i can totally tell the difference between an Utz Crab Chip and any other type of crab chip (lays now makes crab chips)...and no other Salt and Pepper chip comes close to Utz in my opinion

I can definitely taste the difference between Utz and many, if not all, other brands. I'm not sure I can describe the difference in words, though.

I am fairly certain I could do the blind taste test for Utz. But then again it depends on which version of Utz you are talking about... plain old red bag Utz or any of their specialty.

Favorite Utz story... about 5 years ago I discovered a flavor called Susquehanna BBQ. I loved it, kettle cooked and just a GREAT blend of flavors. I couldn't locate it in the Baltimore area, only in PA could I get it. I wrote to Utz and they replied that indeed it was not available in the MD market. UGH!

I have eaten potato chips all over they country - they are definitely a regional food - and UTZ are among the top 5, no doubt. Zapp's are very good, Route 11 is pricey but even better, Humpty Dumpty is awful, Golden Flake even worse. We are lucky to have UTZ...and the ones in the Big Can are Prime. You can get them online and, FYI, they are gluten-free!

I can definitely tell the difference between an Utz and any other chip. No other Crab Chip, Sour Cream and Onion, Salt and Vinegar, Salt and Pepper, BBQ, or Carolina BBQ style compares - the other chip companies who make these flavors always use too much flavoring. Utz has just the right amount.

I like Utz and will always buy them over a national brand. I know a bunch of folks from Hanover, PA and they definitely say UTZ differently then people from Baltimore. It's pretty funny.

Okay, Butters--we all want to know how they say UTZ up in Hanover!

My favorite chips are Herrs! Their sour cream and onion is the best in the world, in my opinion. And they're a PA snack company too. I LOVE their ketchup chips. I first had ketchup chips in Australia and was thrilled when they hit the US. Its a little sweeter and less spicy than BBQ chips. Don't be afraid of them, give them a try!

Utz's Red Hot chips are the absolute best!!

This site is awesome. I continually encounter something new & different right here. Thank you for that data.
