Alice's Law of Compensatory Cash Flow

Uffizi_Hallway.jpg

My upcoming trip to Italy almost had a disastrous glitch. The one thing I tried to get tickets for in advance through TickItaly.com was the Uffizi, and I got an e-mail Friday saying it was booked.

I was devastated, but on the other hand, by Alice's Law of Compensatory Cash Flow, more money to spend on a good meal.

Alice's Law of Compensatory Cash Flow, in case you're not familiar with it, is a precept I live by. Alice was writer Calvin Trillin's wife, and the law went something like (I'm paraphrasing here): Any purchase even fleetingly contemplated and then not made, you have that amount of money to spend as a windfall.

But what happens when it turns out TickItaly.com made a mistake, and I do have tickets for the Uffizi after all? Somehow I feel like I still have that extra money.

This trip is on my own dime, not the Sun's, so I'm planning to eat in small, untouristy, not-so-expensive restaurants (like every other tourist to Rome, Florence and Venice), and I haven't done my homework yet. Suggestions welcome.

Ohhh! I'm so jealous that you're doing the Italian vacation trifecta - Rome, Florence and Venice!

1) Rome: although not exactly what you're looking for in regards to the not-so-expensive tip I recommend Spirito DiVino in the Trestavere on Via dei Genovesi Tel: 065896689. Delicious food, beautiful space and perfect for wine lovers. Probably one of the best restaurants in Rome.

2) Florence: before dinner, stop by the Hotel Continetale on Vicolo dell'Oro 6 and head to the Sky Lounge rooftop bar for cocktails. A hidden gem on the right bank with killer views of the river and Ponte Vecchio. Then, eat dinner at Boca Negra - I can't find the the address. Great atmospehere, farmhouse tables, delicious food and impeccable service.

We just liked getting lost in Venice and stumbling across a place to eat.
Enjoy!

Grazie mille

My husband and I spent 2 weeks in Italy for our honeymoom and I don't think you will find bad food but when in Rome check out a little place called Le Tavernelle. It is very close to the Colosseum. We were very big on asking the locals where they go to eat and we had some fabulous meals and were treated like stars. In so many of the restaurants the chef would come out to chat and take pictures.

The pizza across from the Vatican is also the best pizza you will ever eat. I dream of it at night. Try to get away from the big cities if you can though, that is where you will really see what Italy is all about.

SGI has the right idea. We were in Italy last summer and in Switzerland last month, and we love just strolling around in the evening reading the menus (almost always posted outside) and peering over diners' shoulders in outdoor cafes to see what looks good!
Be spontaneous, Elizabeth!

I’m sure you would enjoy your trip to Rome, Florence and Venice. There you would find the best pizza you have ever tasted. You can also enjoy other delicacies as you sit by their farmhouse tables and enjoy their cozy ambiance. Like what Darlene said, you can also ask the locals for the best restaurants at their place. There are no better witnesses than those locals for sure. I hope you enjoy your trip! I believe you’ll have a wonderful time there I love to visit those places. I wish I could have time for a vacation there as well!
