Lunch at Cinghiale
From Taste editor Kate Shatzkin:
It figures that while Elizabeth's in Italy, an eagerly awaited restaurant witha Northern Italian theme is opening in Baltimore. Cinghiale, the fourth restaurant from culinary power couple Tony Foreman and Cindy Wolf, is to begin serving lunch next week. (Dinner to follow soon, we're told.)
For now the hours will be 11:30 to 2 p.m., Monday-Friday. You can eat in either dining room of the 9,000-square-foot restaurant -- the casual "enoteca" or the dressier "osteria" -- and valet parking is complimentary.
The web site isn't up yet, but reservations can be made at 410-547-8282. The restaurant is at 822 Lancaster St. in Harbor East. The name (pronounced ching-GYAH-lay) means "wild boar" in Italian.
Judging from his blog, Foreman will be happy to finally have the place up and running. At the end of August, he wrote that the final days of construction at Cinghiale made him feel like "the kid with all the baseball gear you can imagine; he's waited all winter to play, and he wakes up to rain on the morning of the first game. He just stares out the window and mutters at the rain clouds..."

My wife and I along with another couple went to Cinghiale's tonight at the invitation of Tony Foreman. We had very high expectations based on our dining experiences at Charleston. Maybe we set the bar a bit high. The evening started out fine. We were quickly welcomed and taken to our table. It seemed like every employee of the restaurant was working tonight. Our server quickly came over and poured us complimentary Spumante. Again, a nice way to start our evening. We were given our menu's and after a few minutes to look it over our server was back to answer our questions. After we ordered the Sommelier came over to see if we needed some help with selecting a wine. Actually I don't know if she was the Sommelier or the Asst. Sommelier but she was very helpful. After telling her what we had all ordered she made several excellant suggestions. We selected a 2001 Chianti classico riserva, Felsina "Berardenga" 2001. It went very well with the variety that we ordered as she had promised. Up to this point all had gone very well. After our first course was served things started to go wrong. Several of our selections were mixed up and brought to the wrong person. We had asked if the portions would be like a tasting menu. We were told that the antipaste, le paste, and the Oggi would be like a tasting portion and that people usually ordered 2 starters and an entree. I ordered a half portion of the Casunsei but nevered received it. Instead I was given a half order of the marubini. My wife had ordered that. I realized that I was given the wrong item after I had begun eating it. My fault. It was very good. When they finally realized the error I said not to worry about it I was fine with the Marubini. We had to remind them that my wife had ordered it also. I know it was only a half portion but what my wife received was noticeably a much smaller amount that what I received. Both were ordered as half portions so this bothered me. My friend ordered the Lamb and said it was a bit tough. My wife and I split the Cioccolato and both of us ordered cappichino. Our server asked us if we wanted the cappichino brought with our dessert or right away. We said with the dessert. The cappichino came about 5 minutes after our dessert arrived. Mine was only warm but my wife's was hot. When the bill came there were a few items on their that didn't belong. After receiving the correct bill we paid and left a bit dissapointed with our evening at Cinghiale. Earlier I mentioned that it seemed like every employee was working. There was simply too much help there. They were more than just a bit unorganized and in some cases rather slow in realizing mistakes. This was there first night open to the public. I believe that when they get these kinks worked out they'll shine like Charleston! I'll give them a another try in a few months.

Four of us had dinner last night(27th) and were rather disapointed. There was confusion about what menus to order from, only half of our wine flights came before we had to ask 2 people what happened. We took the sharing / Tapas approach and ordered many different items that we all tasted. Our waiter (who was great) consulted us about whether to bring it out as the food became ready, or all at once. we wanted it as it became ready. Twice the wait staff tried to clear our plates, yet we still had more food coming out. The portions were small so we have to order more food. On our second order we got the Large Risotto portion ($29). The rice was hard and the large portion barely served the four of us. good thing we went with the large. Calamari was OK, the cheese selection was one of the highlights of the night, along with the desserts, very good desserts. We were told this was supposed to be a step above Pazo, however, if given the choice I would rather go to Pazo.
