An exciting announcement
Listen up, boys and girls. I have a treat for you. In honor of my daughter's birthday month, I'm designating the week of August 19 through 25 Sugar Week.
A little history is in order here. I thought I was the perfect mother. I made all her baby food from healthful, natural, unprocessed ingredients. Then one day she toddled up to the dining room table and started eating sugar by the handfuls out of the sugar bowl. I realized then it was hopeless. This is someone who has discovered that chocolate is one of the four major food groups.
Sugar Week is going to be a celebration of sweets: The Baltimore area's best bakeries, chocolatiers you might not know about, the best restaurant desserts, the greatest desserts of all time (such as Maida Heatter's Pie That's Better Than Sex), and, of course, my own favorite desserts and dessert recipes. Except for the restaurant desserts and my own recipes, this isn't really my area of expertise, so between now and then if there are any places you think I should know about, please post below.
Let the festivities begin.

Best birthday present ever. Thanks!! And yes, it's really me. As for the infamous sugar bowl incident, I prefer to think of it as an early indicator of my wisdom and resourcefulness. Any bakeries, chocolate shops, and adoring fans who are thinking of sending Sugar Week promotional goodies to my mom can forward them directly to me here in LA. Happy Sugar Week.

Hie thee to Edelweiss Bakery, 6000 Harford Rd (at Old Harford)! Doesn't matter what you get--you can't miss. And, this time of year, try Woodlea Bakery's peach pastry (as opposed to the peach cake). You won't regret it.
Happy birthday to the offspring, and as Jacques Pepin says, "happy eating."

Happy Birthday!! I hope Sugar Week becomes a tradition....my pick for best sugar indulgence would be the pecan and apple pies from Full Moon restaurant. The crusts are flaky and hand made with delicious fillings that make your taste buds happily sated. And the slices of pie are so wonderfully huge that they should have their own zip code!!
And, if you get there early, request to sit in the booth next to the outdoor waterfall. Perfect location for eating pie.
Full Moon is known for the bar and deck parties on weekends but it's the pie that keeps me coming back.

Doughnuts? The world's best were Donna Lee Donuts in Simi Valley,
California in the 70's -- fresh made, on the premises, open kitchen
before that became stylish -- it was just how the place was laid out.
Now? Tutti Donas here in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.
Not an open kitchen, but fresh, delicious, made on the premises, the
absolute best -- reminds me of good old Donna Lee's.

I thought I was the only one that thought it was the best donuts. I tried to visit it a few years back and they are gone. Is it true that they are the same people that founded Fosters Donuts? Thanks for bringing back memories.

Yes - DONNA LEES DONUTS in Simi were the best ever - (nothing like a 'chain' donut maker)! Does anyone know if they rebuilt after they burned down?
