Commenting, part trois

Yesterday the 900th comment was posted to my blog. That might not seem significant to you, but the thing I like best about blogging as opposed to writing for the print edition is that there's continual feedback. There's something very satisfying about having concrete proof that someone is reading what you're writing. For years, I would only hear from readers if I made some mistake, and then -- as former restaurant critic John Dorsey once said -- they fall on you like ravening wolves.

This is a lot more fun.

My only regret is that you can't see all the comments as they're posted the way I do, so you probably miss some when people go back and post on earlier entries, sometimes weeks later. That's too bad because the comments can be more entertaining than my original post, although I shouldn't admit it. For instance, Kathy's comment on my post "Next Sunday's Review" or TS's on my daughter's fridge

I want to be like the used car dealership that awards the 1,000th customer a trip to Bermuda, but somehow I don't think The Powers That Be are going to spring for a trip to Bermuda.

I'll have to think of another prize for the 1,000th commenter. Maybe an advance copy of the Dining Guide. I'll do my best, but now that I've announced my intention, probably they won't let me have an advance copy of the Dining Guide.

I'll think of something.

901! Look at me! I am commenting on the comment thread!

Thanks for all your efforts ... reading this blog (and the amusing comments) sure beats work.

If only the blog could have a filter on the recently posted comments! Thanks for the heads up on the new comments -- I agree with TS's comment on your daughter's fridge.

Elizabeth, this blog is one of the best things to happen to the Sun in a long time. I read it before I switch over to the Washington Post to read the daily comics. By the way, the Sun really should reconsider adding the daily comic strips to this site. Then, after I have reviewed all the fun stuff, I go back and read the News. But, I usually cannot stomach the serious stuff until I have reviewed the lighter side of life.

So, thanks for a great feature and keep the posts coming!

I'm hooked! I now read your blog [and review comments on past postings] before reading the obituaries. It's a much better way to keep in touch with Baltimore. Thanks for sharing with us.

I don't even live in the Baltimore area anymore and I still read your blog several times a week. I love keeping up on the food scene, plus, it's a good & quick distraction from work. Thanks for all the hard work!

Can't the webheads figure out a way to add a side link to recently posted comments?

I may be late on this but am devastated. I went to Artifact Coffee and found that they were closed. The workers told me that it would be closed altogether and become part of the Woodberry restaurant. How can Baltimore lose a source of such heavenly brew?? Anyone else hear anything about this. Thanks for looking into this.
And isn't this a great way to keep up on local eating/drinking news to all of us local (or looking for local) foodies? Now it's just not Wed & Sun to devour some more food news. Thanks for creating this!

About this blog
Richard Gorelick was appointed The Baltimore Sun's restaurant critic in September 2010. Before joining the paper staff fulltime, he contributed freelance criticism and features articles about food to area and regional publications. Along the way, he dispatched for short-distance trucking companies, shilled for cultural non-profits, and assisted in cognitive neurology research – never the subject, always the control.

He takes restaurants seriously but not himself, and his favorite restaurant is the one you love, too.
