The Next Big Thing

PlainWToppingsnew.jpg

My daughter, who is absolutely On Trend always (hey, she lives in LA, doesn't she?) tells me that Pinkberry is the next big thing.

I'm skeptical, because I just can't believe that most Americans will happily eat tart frozen yogurt. In other words, ...

...yogurt that tastes like yogurt rather than disguising itself as ice cream.

Plus, it only comes in two flavors: plain and green tea.

But I've seen the lines snaking out the doors of franchises in California, and there are now four Pinkberrys in New York, so maybe I'm wrong. Devotees refer to it as "crackberry."

Remember, you read it here first.

I, too, was curious about the Pinkberry craze. So when I stumbled across the store I went in and ordered a plain with fresh strawberries. It didn't live up to the hype for me although I think it would have been a lot tastier with a crunchy, sweet topping. The tart on tart taste of the not-so-ripe strawberries on the yogurt was too much. I'll try it again - interested to hear others' thoughts!

I'm curious about Pinkberry, too. On a relateed tangent, have you tried the new Pitango Gelato in Fells Point? Absolutely amazing gelato and sorbet--all natural, no artificial anything.

They even have a mojito sorbet!

Actually, I heard about it a while ago on a celebrity gossip blog, of all things. I'm planning on giving it a try when I go up to NYC in October.

I've had tangy frozen yogurt before (and for the life of me I can't remember where) and I can still taste it on my mind's tongue. It was far more interesting than the supersweet, un-yogurty stuff that was so popular in the 70s and 80s.

Oh, this is an Asian thing! Has anyone ever had the little pink plastic cartons of drinkable yogurt from the Asian grocery store? (Sometimes you get one after a meal at a Korean restaurant). The drink tastes a little tart, a little sweet and is v. refreshing. The Pinkberry product is like the frozen version, probably more like sorbet than ice cream.

My sister went to a Pinkberry in New York and said it was great! I can't wait to try.

Anybody heard of this lawsuit against Pinkberry?

Apparently it's not really yogurt that they're serving since they make it in house - a no-no in California.
